It just seemed like I flew through the story. I thought maybe it was the number of the pages. But then when I re-checked the number (95) I thought, "No, its was too full for that."
I just really enjoyed the story and the author did a good job in the pages that were there.
Sure there were no real big surprises but I didn't have a problem with that. I guess for me, it was about the characters. f you want a deeper story, this is probably not for you. But for others? I think you just might enjoy this charming story.
Complications arise when the boy's real father arrives back on the scene from an overseas assignment in Chile. John Reid McCrae appears to have a poor parenting track record, but Shawna's friend Alice knew him many years ago and offers a different opinion. In the meantime Shawna grows attached to Billy, who is about to be given to a new foster family. Billy runs away once again, but even more puzzling is the strange affect Billy's dad has upon Shawna. What outcome ensues for Billy, John, and the Deputy Sheriff whose lives have become entangled.
A heartwarming story revolving around coming of age, domestic violence, foster care, romance, pets and peer relationships that will tear at the heart strings of young adult and adult readers. Actually, the book could be a middle grade read if one is willing to look past a few curse words and one or two light romantic scenes. Snow Pup is the kind of story that will put the reader in the mood for the holiday season.
It is nice to read a story about foster children that has a nice ending. Also, that there are compassionate people that care so much about their welfare. So often we hear about only the bad in our society. So, a breath of fresh air for me. Toss in that hint of romance for that extra spark in this story.
Highly recommended and will check to see what other titles this author has available.
Deputy Shawna Mallory finds Billy and a puppy under a pile of snow in the park after he ran away and he opens his eyes and asks if he is dead and she is his own personal angel; she falls in love with Billy a very sad eleven-year-old. He ran away from an abusive situation in a foster home and Shawna takes him in as a temporary foster mom.
John is back from years of working overseas to claim his son but has to apply to the social service system and prove he is a worthy father for Billy.
This sets up the story for Shawna and John to get to know one another and romance develops while Billy struggles with the hurt of never feeling wanted. It is an emotional story full of conflicting emotions that show the depth of each character and the love of the puppy, Snow for his new young master. I love stories set at Christmas with happy endings.
