First, I will say that I have finished Books 1 and 2 and am reading Book 3 now. That's how much I have enjoyed this series.

For me the most enjoyable part is that this actually COULD happen to us - being thrust into a life from 100 years ago after a solar event. This is something that my father taught me about. That being said, I am not prepared like Mac, one of the central characters in the edge-of-your seat series.
I like how the novels toggle back and forth between the four main characters. Jay is a librarian who has never taken his survivalist neighbor and former soldier, Mac, seriously, making light of his talks about being prepared to survive without our current luxuries. When he wakes one morning to find that the world around him has changed, he is forced to face the fact that Mac was right and he has tough decisions to make.
Jay's wife Kate, a former Air Force pilot is now a pilot on a domestic airline. When the event happens, she is thousands of feet in the air in an airplace. Can she use her military training to save the plane, herself and its passengers?
Back home, Jay is convinced that she has not survived and finally makes the tough decision to set out to save his daughter Leah, a college student living two states away. What he faces on the way is a very realistic depiction of how most all people would react to a cataclysmic event like a Solar Storm.
Leah, teams up with a group of her college classmates to try to survive hunger, cold, and the merciless actions of others desperate to survive.
Mac, Jay's neighbor and former soldier has been preparing for some sort of major event for years. He has prepared a hideout with food and other necessities in a remote setting and encourages Jay to get his daughter, Leah, and come to the hideout for safety and shelter. But as I am beginning to find out in Book #3, Mac will face his own challenges as he waits for Jay and Leah to make their way to the hideout.
Other than a few editing errors, which I have sadly, come to expect, it's clear that the author has done his homework about possible natural catastrophic solar events, human nature in the face of such events, and how important preparations for survival would be in this situation.
I can't wait to finish all 5 books in this series, to find out what happens to these characters. Thanks to the author's talent for creating believable characters, who change with their circumstances, I have become invested in what happens to Jay, Kate, Leah and Mac, as well as other characters added along the way. I really hope that the ending is as good as the books I have read thus far and at this point I would highly recommend this series and this author's work to anyone who enjoys a well-researched, tense, thrill ride of a series!
