5.0 out of 5 stars A Visceral Experience NOT TO BE MISSED
By Edrie on August 4, 2017
Some Freaks is not your typical teen romance flick.

It's not soft-focused giggling into notebooks adorned with hearts and flower doodles. It's gritty, and real, and the characters are as stunningly beautiful as they are flawed, in other words - they are real human beings.

The writer and director Ian MacAllister McDonald draws you into the uncomfortable-to-navigate world of high school romance, and makes plain all of the joys and trials of what it means to be an outsider.

I identify most with Jill, expertly portrayed by Lily Mae Harrington. The new girl, the fat girl, the smart girl, the weird girl, the girl who so badly wishes to "fit in" that she transforms her entire being to conform with and disappear into polite society.

The score of the film highlights tough-to-watch scenes with amazing grace and restraint. It's light and melodic, but not sugary or filled with bubblegum-pop like I've come to expect from teen dramas. It's a very modern feeling score and composer Walter Sickert absolutely nailed my favorite scene in the movie with his scoring choices, making me gasp in surprise and horror at the action on the screen. I won't describe the scene here as is so unexpected and would be a major spoiler, but WATCH THE MOVIE - you will be as stunned as I was!
