Great show! Irritated that the curse words are bleeped out though.

Show and content is amazing. Reminds me of Bochco's Hill Street Blues in a way. But the bleeping out of the curse words is intrusive and really bothersome. When you pay for an 18+ show, you expect 18+ dialogue.

More realistic portrayl of police work
Verified purchase
This crime show is unique in that the plots of the actual crimes committed aren't the engaging focal point, but, rather the emphasis on the lives and personalities of the cops involved. Unlike many cop shows where law enforcement protagonists are portrayed as attractive superheroes larger than life, these characters are three dimensional, realistic and bring to the job all their psychological baggage and human foibles. For all its dismal and violent portrayal of life in the city of angels, there are flashes of brilliant sarcasm and gallows humor which the cops in this show demonstrate to emotionally cope with the death and brutality they encounter on a daily basis. The varied ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds of these characters add complexity and depth as they are effectively woven into the story line. The strength of Southland is that the viewer can empathize with the pain-killer addiction or marital problems of the main characters exacerbated by the stress inherent in police work while simultaneously coming to the realization that they are not necessarily likeable.

Southland: best cop drama? Yes
Verified purchase
I started watching Southland in season 4, and liked it so much that I decided to start watching from the beginning. Season 1 is an excellent season of TV that throws you right into the world of the LAPD without any hand-holding. The cast is large, as the show covers the patrol officers and detectives on their day-to-day lives on the job. The pace is frenetic and the acting is so raw and realistic that the show at times feels more like a documentary than a scripted drama. The acting is excellent, the cases usually very strong, and there is a clear arc over the course of the season.

If you are new to Southland, season 1 is as good a place as any to start. If you came to the show late, like me, it is quite interesting to compare the characters in seasons 4 and 5 to where they started out in season 1, as certain characters have changed dramatically.

Is Southland the best cop show? As someone who isn't generally a fan of the drama, though I enjoyed NYPD Blue and early Law and Order, and consider The Wire one of the best dramas of all time, yes, I think Southland is the best cop drama. For me, it comes down to the characters, who are so unique and compelling and different from what I've come to expect of TV police.

Entertaining yet...

Right up front, I'd rate it much higher, but in this day and age, it is rife with so many ethnic stereotypes, which they somehow equates with Hollywood diversity.

That being said, the show is entertaining and has the feel of a cross between the movie Get Shorty and Ray Donavan. Note: Shorty is the main actor's daughter.

How did I not know about this show?!
Verified purchase
Was looking for "cop" themed shows after re-watching old ones we loved like The Shield. I can't believe I'd never heard of this. Absolutely outstanding show. Only complaint is all the nights we stayed up way too late to "watch just one more."

Great and gritty show for LEO's and general people a like!
Verified purchase
I thought this show was an interesting take on the day in the life of LAPD officers. That being said it is a "show" so the entertainment value calculated separately I still think it is one of the better LEO shows that has been written. Defenanly more gritty than Blue Bloods and less procedural than Law and Order.
All in all I gave it five stars because I liked the characters. Also some of the true to life banter between the officers makes me feel like I'm watching real cops talk to each other. Take it or leave it, one persons opinion.

The start of an excellent series (now cancelled)

Despite the title, I re-watched only the pilot episode on demand. It was fast paced, interesting and seemed fairly realistic. I would recommend watching the whole series, although doing it at $.99 an episode might be more than you need to pay. Given the success of the multiple seasons I am surprised entire seasons are not available on Netflix or Amazon Prime for no additional charge. I will probably wait for that to happen before I watch more. It's probably also likely to come back in syndication for free somewhere, although I believe there is a certain number of episodes required for that to happen and I am not an expert on that.

Regina King is an awesome actress. Shawn Hatosy is not only a great actor but he's easy on the eyes. Great show. Love the plot.
