Okay. I don't want to ruin all the fun. I'll say it's enjoyable but you have to realize the comedy is a kind of spoofing. of other movies of different times.
Maybe spoofing is not the correct term, but it tries to borrow and mix material from other movies and when it may miss a bit that's like a spoof in my mind at least and makes it all the more fun to watch on subsequent viewings. (How many references from other movies would this have? Maybe a dozen or more, I'll leave that to film students to decide.)
So this does things like give you the feel that it's one of the "great misses" from a 1980's movie sci-fi spoof. But it's not from the 80s. It's actually from 1997, So what makes this a hit. Well all the references to other movies. Let me say this takes and references a bunch of things. . . now I can list the things but some of the humor is kind of like stereotypes and perhaps the comic mind of how a 14 year old would look at the world and stereotypical "playboy" mentality even from who knows how long ago. There's a scene which could be thought of as a spoof on Star Wars as well, and other science fiction movies that hit, or missed big time. As such it kind of goes toward a kind of shock humor as well. If you are trying to mix a bunch of different things let me say REFERENCE" them in a kind of mixed up way and you're pretty good, then you'd end up with a movie like Space Truckers. Because I appreciate and have seen these other movies I can really enjoy the movie from an analytical (HIT and MISS) perspective. So it's like a great comedy for those who like to analyze these kinds of movies. From a kind of shock comedy point if view which mixes trucking and SCI FI, but it's a kind of half cheesy typical cyborg kind of SCI-FI, this is really a five star movie. It's five stars not because of it's successes but because of it's failures as well. So you can laugh at this from a point of stupid sci-fi and shock value, but also later in subsequent viewings at the attempt which hits and misses at being the best movie with a STRANGE ATTRACTOR element in it which perhaps is going to far for the taste of some. This might not be something for small children to watch with some sexual references of course. But it's fine for adults who can handle that level of humor, which is more like 14 year old schoolboy humor mixed with the 1980's future vision from the 80's. Yet created much later.
How many levels of spoofing or borrowing from other movies to throw you into the mix of a mess this tries to meld itself into. It's messy, but trucking is often messy. So it's messy by design. And the basics of our view of stereotypical views of trucking means the mess, is just a movie diner of life -you'd come to expect. From that perspective the movie is brilliant in it's craftsmanship. With some it will rate five stars, just because it offends the politically correct movie purest. What do you expect from a movie that is about truckers? Hopefully this review has said enough to be revealing and yet not spoil the fun of the movie. If you can handle a little bit of grimy dirty human nature in space and are prepared for some shock humor. Let me say when I first saw this movie at least one scene left me laughing so loud with a friend our stomachs ached. But that's the shock value the joke and like Something About Mary, the shock value of humor is often only good the first time you watch it. Acting is fine, and the lines are so bad at times, that makes me want to laugh even more. To me to watch something that s funny this movie hits all the buttons for a good laugh and that is all that is required to kill some time with some laughs. Now what kind of movie is this related to as far as quality it gets or tries to achieve. Well I'd have to say it's almost like a mix between The Fifth Element, and Iron Sky. I enjoyed both of those movies which had a larger budget it would seem. Iron Sky might have been shot on a smaller budget than this, but Iron Sky was done so well (remember it's politically correct from a European look at US politics). Iron Sky is also brilliant as a kind of shock spoof comedy. I think Iron Sky is a huge failure in it's politically correct outlook, but even that could be thought of as a spoof. So with that in mind, this movie is pretty darned good. It objectively rates below the other two movies in my mind and for some of course it's way below 4 stars, but for some it probably rates as a five star movie in some way. I can't say it's a five star movie objectively but in some ways it may be. So I'll give it four stars.
