No Fluff, Successful Skill Practice Kids Need

As a teacher, I know how important it is for students to continue to sharpen their skills, even away from school. I bought this for my second grade son as an enrichment book because we had previously purchased the 1st and 2nd Grade books in years prior. The work was clear and easy to follow and just what he needed to work on advanced skills for his grade. This would be a great workbook for 3rd graders and younger students ready to work in advanced skills. The worksheets are easy to follow and have just enough color to make them attractive. My son loves these books and we by them every year for him during the summer so he gets an early start on the next year’s standards. The book is very traditional, none of the meaningless fluff that is so rampant in education these days. Sometimes, students just need to practice skills, and this book is a great way to do this.

Great for homeschool

I really like spectrum books for our homeschool. My only issue is that for certain topics there are too many practice problems. Like, my kid gets the concept and can do the work just fine, but there are still 4 pages of practice problems that I end up just skipping because it's just busy-work at that point. The only other thing is that there isn't a lot of example problems. Which isn't too big of a deal. I understand elementary math well enough to teach it without a lot of examples. But for someone who isn't as strong in math, they might like more examples. These are thorough and comprehensive, though. Simpler to teach from than any of the other math programs I've tried and if you want a lot of practice problems all in one workbook, this is a nice option. Doesn't take up a lot of storage space.

I got these (3rd/4th/5th grades) for my nieces to catch them up with their math during this whole COVID shutdown. These math books are great. The chapters have Pretests so that they can review what they know, and if they ace it, I let them skip the chapter. If not, I just have them go through that chapter (or parts of it) and have them take the Post-test at the end of it. If they know most of the stuff, I let them skip to the mid-test. If they don’t know something, they go back and review certain lessons.

My nieces have been liking these books, too. The they’re formatted nicely and are pretty decent at teaching concepts. I also plan ahead and highlight the page numbers and mark rows of questions I want them to answer so they know what to work on. Just today I paired 30 min. increments of math books with 30-45min of “Reading Eggs” online (google it, my nieces love it). It really breaks up the monotony.

I love these books and will be using them lots!

Good to Supplement School Curriculum

I think this is a great book to supplement the regular school curriculum but I do not think it's a stand alone book. The lessons progress rapidly (such as review of addition and subtraction and instantly a lesson adding the hundreds). In our school curriculum, we review concepts regularly so that they are understood and practiced. This one jumps to the next level with every concept and does not go back and review what was learned. I think it's fantastic to provide with the regular curriculum but is not a stand alone curriculum. It provides confidence with the third grade curriculum because they practice their lessons but you will need another book for the curriculum if you are using this for homeschooling. This is a great addition to remote learning, if you are already part of a school system giving lessons remotely.

I really liked this book and it was a good fit for my kids for the following two reasons: Lots of problems for practice (compared to Sylvan). Comprehensive and logical (it made sense and gave you plenty of practice).

I found only a couple of issues with the layout towards the end: Some of the fraction lines were off and the kids were confused because the spaces where they were supposed to write answers didn't match the examples. Also, one of the line plots included data up to 12 inches, but the line only extended 10 inches.

But I can live with those things and would buy this book again.

Great book with a variety of problems to solve

This workbook has a variety of age-appropriate topics. The pages tear out so I used this book to give my child some extra math practice at home during 3rd grade. Once the school year ended, I bought the book again to review concepts over the summer and hopefully build confidence. I am a huge fan of the Spectrum math workbooks, but this I the first one I have actually bought twice for the same kid!

Teacher Pay Teacher gets expensive and although some activities are cute they are not always great quality. I have been impressed with the quality of material in this book. It is easy to match the standards I am trying to teach.
