How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 starsAlthough I Use Speed Reading This Book Was Very Useful to Me
Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2021
I guess I first picked up speed reading techniques, consciously, or unconsciously in the 7th grade and honed these skills in high school. By the time I got to college and grad school these skills were very important to me. However, I have always wanted to read as fast as possible while retaining what I had read. Peter Hollis’s work was a good refresher course, but more than that, his discussion of the value of pre-reading, and techniques to classify information, and to retain it through various techniques, such as mind maps and knowledge trees was extremely worthwhile. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve their reading speed and comprehension of what they have just read.

1.0 out of 5 starsNo substance mostly filler
Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2021
It's a very short book with only 4 chapters, but every chapter is padded with a summary and the book ends with a summary, so mostly repeat content.

The book's title says read a book a day but the first chapter begins by stating it's "biologically impossible" to read fast and goes into a long discussion about the reason.

The next chapter doesn't discuss reading but everything you should do to prepare for reading. This chapter makes up 40% of the book, but has nothing to do with actually reading, only systems like SQR3 or 4P's on how to start reading.

The next chapter finally gets to the "meat and bones" as Peter calls it to actually increase the speed of reading, but is only three outdated tips sub-vocalization, word-chunking, and skimming. He himself admits subvocalization doesn't always work and he he barely gives any instruction on word-chunking, only a link to another resource.

The last chapter is suppose to offer tips on improving comprehension but mainly covers eye fitness and not comprehension. Then he spends four paragraphs recommending someone else's book David Butler's Speed Reading with the Right Brain, which is terrible.

There are some tips on retention but there are very simple like take notes, summarize, and use mind maps.

Very little of this short book with a lot of summaries is on speed reading with the author not convinced that it is even possible, which explains why he doesn't give direct tips to increasing reading, only padded fillers.

I would not recommend it, definitely skip this book.

I got a lot out of this book. Even though I read pretty fast already, my long-range retention is very poor. This book had a lot of concrete information that was presented in an engaging fashion, and I think if I put its suggestions into practice, I will be a much better learner. And the title is sort of misleading. It's not so much about *speed* reading as it is about *effective* reading.

Great read, Explaining the techniques directly with no non-sense details. Speed reading is a journey, you won’t read the book and wake up the next morning speed reader. You must put the time practicing, that is what Peter addresses right on.. highly recommended for those of us where reading is a daily essential ingredient of survival like the air we breathe…

Speed reading and retaining all the information read is a skill for life. This book contains very useful tips on how to do so! Time is an asset and we have such limited amounts of it.. so if you're a person who likes (or doesn't like) reading, read this first!

Skimming and scanning is helpful, and this book helps you strategize and read by concepts. Awesome and empowering! Recommended to everybody

When I was young, Evelyn Wood Speed Reading was the only game in town as far as I knew. It didn't help me much, but I blame myself mostly since my mind was not on cerebral matters at the time (21 years old, Viet Nam getting hot, etc.). This book has helped me to speed up even while reading it. I tried some of the suggestions and they seemed to work. In any case, it's a fairly short read and anyone not already familiar with the concepts in the book might find improvement in reading speed just as I did, that is: Right away.

I liked that it used other books as examples. So many speed reading books do not. It gets to the point. There were even a few things I've never heard of before.

it was not enough to read books on speed reading, I had to reach a point where it was extremely important for me to be free to read as much as I wanted. This book reviewed what it takes at a time I was ready to listen.

I have a lot of books I want to read for learning purposes and I wanted some tips on how to work through them quicker. Pete's book gave me just what I wanted, some methodologies and tips for reading quicker while maintaining comprehension and retention. I don't view it as an exhaustive treatment of the subject, which is good, because I did not want one. Good job Pete!
