A ``fix-up'' to de Lint's Moonheart (1984), consisting of one short and three long stories previously published separately and a brief prologue. Various adventures take place in and around Tamson House, a sprawling structure occupying a full city block in modern-day Ottawa. The House hosts a variety of semi-transient artsy misfits, from neo-pagans to aspiring poets, drawn by its magic; the garden is a gateway to an Otherworld of blended Celtic and Native American mythology. The first story is a sort of set-piece, while each of the other three involves mystical threats to Tamson House and/or its occupants. The good vs. evil plots are very familiar, and de Lint draws little narrative tension out of them. Though the threats seem potent, none of the principal characters ever suffers any real harm. And the characters themselves are not interesting enough to make up for the lack of tension--the mythic figures are simply categorized like game pieces (``the bard,'' ``the woodwitch''), and the ``real'' people (such as Blue, the sensitive ex-biker) are tirelessly reasonable, forgiving, wise, compassionate, fair, selfless--and boring. De Lint's evocative mingling of disparate mythic elements might have provided the missing spark, but his use of the legends never gets beyond New Age shallowness. About the Author

Charles de Lint is the award-winning author of fantasy fiction, including urban fantasy, contemporary magical realism, and mythic fiction. I had long been interested in returning to Tamson House, so this was just what the doctor ordered. I find the elements from mythology and folklore beautifully woven into a modern, urban setting. DeLint's lyrical writing calls to mind bardic songs of heroes. I had some reservations about the weak-willed character of Emma, but her character stayed true throughout. The book also seemed to have a bumpy start--did DeLint know where he wanted to go? He did. DeLint 's charisma carries through, as Jaime's did after death. I was really reluctant to leave the world of the book to return to mundane matters, but once I took it up again the thread reeled out through the first forest, trips to post-life locations and the house itself. Underlying all are drumbeats and motorcycle revs, which I could swear I felt. Read it; it will not disappoint!

I think that Moonheart deserved a complete novel as a sequel, rather than a series of short stories. There were some inconsistencies--at least one that stuck out glaringly, for me: If the entity (man)that took over Tamson House was powerful enough to create a whole new Otherworld, why was it that all Jamie had to do to overcome him was to touch him? Despite that, I enjoyed the book immensely--it's only that I would have enjoyed it more as a standalone read.

I am a huge Charles de Lint fan, so take that into account when reading this review. I love when he revisits a place and characters he's created (I usually fall in love with both), so I was thrilled to go back with him to Tamson House. I was a little disappointed in the storyline, however, as it seems very much like a rehash of Moonheart in some places, and I'd like to have seen us go on a brand new adventure instead. But, this IS Charles de Lint and his work is brilliant, so even if I was a little disappointed, it was still an amazing story and a fantastic read.
