5.0 out of 5 stars The Reboot Getting Better! Karl Urban Captures McCoy, Simon Peg Great As Scotty & Writer
By Stephanie Sullivan on September 2, 2018
Star Trek Beyond is the 3rd installment in the JJ Abrams universe of Star Trek. Compared to the original series universe it's very heavy on rapid fire action and explosions. But the cast caries this off while fitting a good story between the adrenaline soaked action. The first of this universe was at its essence an origin movie. The second was a reboot of the Khan theme (the 3rd I think within a Star Trek universe rife with recycled story lines), but this is a truly new story and as such seems a gift.

One frequently repeated theme in Star Trek movies and TNG series is the destruction of the enterprise. It happens so often I doubt it's a spoiler to reveal this. An homage to Star Trek Enterprise is also there for anyone who like that prequel series.

As a child of the 60's I can't help but compare this reboot to the original series and characters. I like all the reboot characters. three really capture the feel and "inhabit" the original characters: Karl Urban is more "Bones" McCoy than I would have believed, Simon Peg captures Scotty very well but as if he were in an overdone of Ritalin, and Zachary Quinto gets the essence of Spock isn't quite the same character (maybe good while Nimoy was able to reprise his role as Ambassador Spock).

I can't say enough about Simon Pegg. He writes Beyond as well as playing Scotty. Watching his career since the mini-series "I Am Not An Animal" I am beginning to think Pegg is one of the most underappreciated actors/writers/talents in movies today. I like the humor and playfulness he brings to the role of Scotty and how he does this without compromising the character.

I've been careful not to give any spoilers and hardly spoke about the story. It's good so if you like this new Star Trek universe give it a view. I like it a lot and I'm giving it 5 stars.
