Dark Victory is SO much better, but then, most "#1 of 3" books seem a little incomplete (read my review on Dark Victory so more on that). This book, as all of Shatner's past books, capture the characters well. You can tell that both Shatner & the Reeves-Stevens have a great deal of affection for their characters. His Kirk is definitely fleshed out more here than the show or movies were ever able to in their limited scopes. He's older & wiser, and not as eager to "save the universe" as he used to be, but still steps up to the plate when he needs to. I'll have to argee with some other reviews that Kirk seems to be TOO reckless based on how protective of his crew he's been in the past, but Kirk was always breaking regulations & acting before thinking, RIGHT?
Anyway, this is a good read, and the cliffhanger at the end... well, be glad that book 2 (Dark Victory) is already available. When I read it, I had to wait an eternity for the next book!

In the Star Trek episode "Mirror, Mirror" Captain Kirk and several of his crewmen are transported to a mirror universe with all the people from his own universe. The difference is that instead of being good, they are all evil. Captain Kirk tries to persuade the evil Spock to make a positive change in the evil world of the mirror universe. In this novel called "Spectre" by the writing team consisting of William Shatner, Judith Reeves-Stevens and Garfield Reeves-Stevens, people from the evil mirror universe come enter the good universe and some of them raise hell.

The book gives a description of how a good cause can produce bad results if applied at an improper time. This novel is the first in the Mirror Universe Saga and it is an offshoot of the storyline found in the novel called "The Return" in which James Tiberius Kirk is brought back into existence through cloning. Besides Captain Kirk the book has most of the characters from Star Trek: The Next Generation, and it also has Spock, Scotty and Bones McCoy. The novel is action-packed, it kept me turning the pages and I intend to read more novels in this series.

How many people out there get to write as their favorite characters that they themselves portrayed? Patrick Stewart? Kate Mulgrew, George Takei? Leonard Nimoy? That being said, reading this book, I have NO idea how Kirk survived "dying" from having a bridge fall on him in Generations. But yet, he survived with no explanation and happens to be friends with Picard somehow. They mention the incident in the movie, but leave off the death part.

Looking past the ego stroking premise, it is an interesting premise. Opening up the mirror universe that Kirk himself started and expanding much further on it is interesting. There is nothing special about this book other than its another star trek novel. Its fine as fuel for someone to get their star trek fix way after the shows have been cancelled. But it doesn't have anything really stellar about it. Its great to pass the time, but I wouldn't go out of my way and pay full price for this book.

The book starts out with Jim Kirk fighting with a tree stump in a field on a planet named Chal. We learn that he is no longer with Starfleet, but with a woman he considers to be his heart. He also has stayed out of the call up for the Dominian/Alliance fight, which he's not sure was a good or bad thing for him.

Telilani sends him to a conference on earth h, because she sees the fight that he is having with himself and from there the adventure begins. Lots of action and parts and pieces of the old Jim Kirk

Shatter and the Reeves-Stevens make a great team for the continuing adventures of Kirk, Spock, McCoy and Scotty as they interact with the characters younger generations have come to know from TNG, DS9 and Voyager in the current Star Trek timeline from television and movies. All the books are a fun read, and are well written to keep you looking forward to the next one.

Be wary of the Ebooks though - this is the second one I have bought as an Ebook for when I travel that has been either missing multiple pages, or in he case of this book an entire chapter.

Shatner Makes Amends to Jimmy Doohan

Another excellent Bill Shatner novel, and great fun to read. I'm an original Trekkie, having started watching Star Trek when it first appeared on NBC and have watched it, and read about it ever since. I really got the sense that Bill Shatner was making some nice overtures to Jimmy Doohan, who plays Scottie. From what I've read there has been some bad blood between them, with Jimmy feeling ticked off at Bill. So, I thought that Shatner might have been making some overtures to Doohan in the various scenes in which Scottie chides Kirk for not being in touch for so many years and for not having full confidence in him. Scottie comes off as more 3-dimensional that I've seen him in previous books and there's definitely various scenes of dialog where Kirk is appreciating Scottie more and more. Anybody else pick up on this, and tie it into the real-life conflict between the two actors?

This is the first in the Mirror universe Sage by Mr Shatner (and friends). In the original TV episode called "Mirror Mirror", Kirk encourages `mirror` Spock to take command of the ISS enterprise and try and do something to change the ways of the empire that exists in the Mirror universe. In this book we hear what actually happened when `mirror` Spock took his advice, without going into details of this story, it is simpler to say, things didn't go well for `mirror` Spock and this story takes place when others come from the mirror universe to get Kirk. This is very well written and has some amazing twists and turns.
