I finished the book but shouldn't have. You know that thing where you have a bucket of sub optimal fried chicken, and after a couple of pieces you're thinking 'I shouldn't eat the rest of this....' but then you do. And end up vaguely hating yourself and your lifestyle choices to date? This book is exactly that. It's weirdly compulsive but there's no nutritional value to it. It's not dreadful but it's unsatisfying. It's just a bit.. meh. Characters are flat, dialogue is mundane and the plotting doesn't suspend disbelief. Sorry. I'm sure the writer is a nice enough bloke, but this isn't a great book. Not space opera, not science fiction, just a bit meh.

The book is an extremely fast read. Literally read it in one long sit down. It's very well written and picks up at a steady pace. A young man with terminal cancer and his best friend answer a text on a whim. The result is they end up buying a spaceship that was made from a robotic head. With the ship they gain a retired assassin who lives in onboard the ship. She has a secret that becomes known towards the end of the book. Hunted by a Feudal Lord in a stellar system far from earth, they eventually link up with a small sentient being whose squirrel size beliefs it's lethality. No disappointments here and none of the repetitive filler many authors use. There are no boring pages. It's a fantastic 1st book and frankly one of the authors better books. 5 stars and looking forward to book 2.

I could only think the reviews that said this must have been written on the wrong book. My only complaint with this novel was that it was way too short IMO. It's a good introduction to a universe that's obviously being fleshed out with a good head start. The MC and his best buddy are shown to be REAL and I had no problems imagining their thoughts and them as people.

It skips light on some of the physics stuff, but its obvious the focus here isn't the tech: It's the people and the drama wrapped up around a dying college kid on his last hopeful adventure and his best friend desperate to save him.

I'm definitely glad I read this.

Ok maybe I should have read more but I couldn't get past 50%, and I at least try to finish but this was like watching 2 three year olds arguing. Honestly the story just wasn't that interesting as it seems just another formula adventure that just flat dragged. If you can stomach finishing it, drop me a line and tell me it got even a touch interesting.

this book starts out with a diagnosis of cancer. then Ben and his buddy go to a video arcade. the game he plays has elements of The Last Starfighter. Ben is giving a text message on buying a real spaceship. they go to see the starship in a vehicle looks like a car but can fly between solar system . the seller has blacked out the window so they can't see they are going interplanetary . they are caught by the sellers enemies and a fire fight breaks out. afterwards the annoying salesman gives the guys a tour of the spaceship. Ben and Matt buy the starship. unfortunately the smarmy guy selling the starship just did not pay the storage fee like he said he would and when Ben and Matt lift off they are now fugitives. the rest you will have to read on your own. for comparison this book is better than Backyard Starship which has similar beginnings but not identical.

The story is well written with good characters. The start was a bit slow and I couldn't believe we were using 'the last starfighter' premise of doing well on a video game..
It was a shame the ending was open although another book is on the way.
Probably aimed at younger audiences. Four stars for the writing and keeping me interested throughout but I won't get the follow up.

I was just looking for something new to read and, while searching for a title I read as a youngster, I happened across this trio of novels. I do like the story though a bit too stretched at times and sometimes the action goes from first to third person mid sentence. But it has filled a reading gap for the last two weeks. Entertaining and even had a lump in my throat in the third book. Some good characters too. Third book does go off in a bit of a far fetched direction.

Clarke but it is quite well written, better than most in the genre, and I enjoyed a good, non stressful read that kept my attention. I'll definitely be getting the next in the series.

Great characters but I quickly started to feel that the two young chaps were, shall we say, attracted to each other! That assumption was somewhat dispelled as the story evolved. A simple plot but many humorous moments. Yes, it was a good read and there has to be a 2nd follow up? If so, I will definitely buy it.
