Great author, great book.

I read this book and watched the movie and I liked them both. I love the way David Nicholls, the author of this book, writes. He also wrote One Day, which is one of my favorite books. The movies of a Starter For Ten and One Day were pretty close to the books. I love British movies and fashion and culture. David Nicholls has a new book called Us which was fun to read too. I wish he would write more. A sequel to Us would be great. He is really good at telling stories. His characters are so lifelike and memorable.

Disjointed Story
Verified purchase
As much as I like the actors the story was helter skelter and in some places was downright stupid. Alice Eve was her usual stunning self but her acting was vapid. I know this was a 2007 movie early in her career. Her acting in "Before We Go" ten years later was superb. The other actors were OK. There are much better rom-coms out there today. I'm an IMDb rating follower (not Stars) and I'd give this a 5.9 instead of its 6.7 rating.

Adorable film, great capture of Britain in the 80s (why has no one mentioned the awesome soundtrack to this movie?) I'll watch anything with McAvoy and I haven't been let don yet. Awesome to see the current roster of great British stars as young and up and coming. Charles Xavier in a film with Dr. Strange? Great way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

good but definitely not great

The movie could have been so much better. The characters were stereotypes. The ending was very predictable. Some of the acting was great and it was fun to see some now famous people when they were young. Great soundtrack.

Witty Coming of Age Story
Verified purchase
A funny, witty coming-of-age story. You could liken it to a British version John Hughes film. You root for the clumsy, loveable, open-hearted protagonist played by the incredibly talented James Mcavoy. He makes many mistakes while exploring college, and ultimately trying to figure out who he is, but his earnestness and openness coerce you fall to forgive his missteps.

A wonderful journey

A wonderful journey of a young man coming of age with ups and downs and downs and ups and it all felt very honest. I highly recommend this.
