Ahead of it's time! Look, I know it's not perfect and it has a weird cast, but it would have been killer if it was made now. I loved the story and I love a good Jimmi Simpson character. This movie is probably one of my favorites, even to this day. I didn't like the pace of the movie and Abigail was just freaking bizarre. I think the movie was not made in the right time for game movies and had they waited a little while (like having it come out 2016 - 2018) it would have killed it. It's definitely a B movie with A list qualities. I have faith that one day this may be revisited and if/when it does, it will just be amazing. They could even keep the same cast and make it shot for shot, just updating the CGI would honestly be enough for me. I suggest giving this a try because it's something different and it's a higher quality B movie.

Earned 4 stars, but I give them grudgingly.

Well it hit all the bases, and that was the problem. The same ol' genre stuff, but done well, good editing to keep the pace, well acted, plot forwardings, and most everything were well produced. But in the slower parts of the film, my mind wandered to all the unanswered questions and the other flaws. Stopped viewing to look up the actors' careers at one point -- slow. But it delivers the scares despite being so pro forma. I give it three stars for me -- meaning "don't watch it again unless you're totally out of other choices." Should've done this one with Netflix. It never got real enough. I got scared but it felt like a cheap shot at me. Well, for $4.21, I guess it was worth it, but I can only suggest others watch it just because it's a decent piece of work.

Stay Alive is awesome!

I don't care what anyone says, this movie is a gem. Yes, it has a nostalgic vibe for me of my days playing video games and being a wannabe goth girl like October, but I still think the movie has some merit. Great kill scenes and dialougue. They should make a video game like the one in the movie.

A good movie

Got this movie since I liked that it's got a decent storyline flow and pretty good acting by some actors I like, and an interesting video game concept for a movie. Wish they would of came out with a game like this cause i would of bought it. They should do a second film especially now. It's not the best horror action movie but still keeps you guessing and pretty decent graphics. Would recommend this movie for any movie collection.

Directors cutscenes are awful

I loved the original movie back when it came out. I heard online the directors cut made the movie even better so I was excited to watch it.

I was so disappointed. You can easily tell which scenes were added since they were awful quality compared to the rest of the movie.

Just watch the original. You are not missing anything

This movie is not as bad as these reviews would make one think, as long as the viewer knows what he's getting himself into. It's just a teen-type flick about a couple of "gamers" who play a game that eventually kills or tries to kill them in "real" life. (In exactly the order one would suspect) Yes, the characters are stereotypically portrayed. There's the foul-mouthed, annoying jerk who most pray will meet his maker ASAP. The goth girl who has built up a tough exterior, creepy Eddie from "Friends" as the creepy boss from this movie, the totally annoying "Malcom in the middle" kid, and so on. It is what it is. Don't expect more and it is entertaining. To address a previous reviewer that accused this movie of not being true to games ("first person doesn't have multiplayer...") Hello, dude. In reality, last time I checked games also don't kill you. This isn't based on a true story. By the way, if you willingly watched a movie with that "Malcom in the middle" kid in it, you shouldn't be so shocked that it doesn't turn out to be Oscar-worthy.

bought for a friend and he loves it! only reason for the 4 stars is because of the push pieces inside the DVD holder were broke. DVD was fine with no scratches. the certain ups shippers should be more careful when handling their products. thanks!!

Its So Much More Than A Movie About A Video Game That Kills People
Verified purchase
I really like this move. Is it the best horror movie I've ever seen? No but it has an original plot and solid cast of characters. It relies more on psychological thrills than blood gore which was also a big plus for me. When I first heard of the concept – “a video game that kills people who play it” – I thought it sounded unbelievably cheesy. But the movie is actually anything but cheesy. The game becomes part of their real life and it becomes harder to distinguish between what is happening in the game and what is really happening. I definitely recommend at least renting this film and seeing it once – and hopefully you are as pleasantly surprised as I was!
