Blog postPhoto by Joel Gaff on Unsplash I’m working in the latest Kurt Hunter Mystery, Backwater Connection. I had a good grasp of the story this time, but needed an inciting incident to open the book. Kurt has been fighting the sandbar parties in Biscayne National Park since last summer with Backwater Haven and Backwater Predator. When I sat down to write the first chapter the day after Memorial Day I saw the chaos as a storm rolled through the Islamorada sandbar. There are a whole bunch of stories t1 week ago Read more

Blog postPhoto by Thomas Bonometti on Unsplash My post on leadership turned into more of a discussion on gun violence and school shootings (they are different) than the intended subject.
Rhetoric is essential for effective leadership. It is a starting point for everything else. One of my points was that on the same day as Mathew McConaughy was giving a speech at the White House, Joe Biden was on late night TV with Jimmy Kimmel. MM sounded presidential, JB sounded like a bitter celebrity. Total2 weeks ago Read more -
Blog postNo, not really, but after hearing him speak yesterday from the White House, I would take him over the current president—and many of the past half dozen on both sides. His speech was a lesson in leadership.
Photo by Jehyun Sung on Unsplash He started with several indisputable truths:
We need to set out a path to get something done
He came to DC to speak to lawmakers, to speak with them, and to encourage them to speak to each other—on both sides of the aisle.

Blog postPart of the thrill of fishing for me is the feel of the fish on the other end of the line. There is both skill and chance in getting the fish interested in the bait, but once it is, the angler is the key factor in landing it.
I’ve fished from the Gulf Stream to small mountain streams and have come to the conclusion that a six-inch trout (about the size of the ballyhoo we use to troll for dolphin) is as much fun to catch as the larger species. What makes this possible is matching the t2 months ago Read more -
Blog postI started to write a piece about the leaked draft of the impeding SCOTUS decision on Roe v Wade, but thankfully veered away from the lightning rod of American Politics.

Blog postI’ve been in the Keys for the past week with my better half and some friends, so I haven’t paid much attention to politics. Interesting enough, not much has changed after taking a week off. I’m still here, but with a few days to kill before some buddies come down to fish the Cow and Bull Dolphin Tournament this weekend.
It’s been windy—really windy here. Typically winds average from 10-12 knots, some days less, others more. The last week the wind has been in the mid 20’s. Still plenty2 months ago Read more -

There’s been a lot of talk recently about the ability of the United States to become energy independent. Being independent as the term is used here means that we produce what we consume. After hitting bottom around 2008, U.S. production has increased to the point where in 2020 our production exceeded our consumption.
So, in theory, we should be able to say adios to Russia and the Middle East, numbers three and four, and t2 months ago Read more -

Blog postThere’s a small sandbar that has brought up a great question of personal freedom versus the good of the majority.
Islamorada Sandbar Sandbar parties are all the rage. The Islamorada Sandbar which lies in sight of US 1 is packed on weekends and crowded on most days. It has a Facebook Page with 48,000 followers. I belong to several fishing groups on Facebook that often have requests for charters to the sandbar. There are now several companies specializing in just that.

Blog postMy books are based on or around the water. That means waves. Sea conditions often affect the plots, especially chase scenes. The prevalent wind direction for the Florida Keys is southeast. That’s good for fishing, but kind of boring in a story, so I tend to mix things up a bit. In Wood’s Chase, for example, I used a north wind for the second half of the story to throw another wrench in the works for my characters to deal with.

Blog postI love polls and surveys—though they should have the warning that they are for recreational purposes only. I’m well aware that how and of whom you ask the question dictates the answer. Pollsters are adept at disguising the fact with shorter click-bait headlines.
You will get an entirely different answer if you ask: Do you like dogs and Do you like dogs with fleas. When you know what answer you desire, you merely have to phrase the question in that light.

Some treasures are better left unfound
In long-ago days, the Gulf Stream current that runs mere miles from the Florida Keys had helped fleets of sailing ships move vast stores of treasure from Havana to Spain. The route was expeditious, though riddled with danger—mainly from hurricanes, pirates, and challenging navigation.
Many vessels never completed that voyage. Today, buried under centuries of sand, lies a vast debris field of treasure, and finding it is only part of the challenge.
Political intrigue, corrupt bureaucrats, and modern-day pirates are just some of the challenges Mac Travis must face to recover what might be the biggest treasure of his life—and, perhaps, of all time.
Enter the world of a deadly smuggling ring
When a small plane crashes in the backcountry of the Florida Keys, an unexpected and deadly chain of events is set in motion.
While helping a friend salvage his boat, Mac Travis witnesses the crash and rushes to help. Following the rescue, Mac trusts his instincts, but is led down a path of danger and deceit—which finally lands him inside a smuggling ring.
A story that highlights the beauty of the Keys while exposing their undesirable underbelly, Wood’s Chase features the unique character of the island chain. Filled with boating, diving, and fishing, with plenty of action, unique characters, and stunning locations, escape on a tropical adventure in the latest in the bestselling Mac Travis Adventures.
How far would you go to save a place that is a part of you?
When a devastating explosion upsets the delicate ecosystem of the Florida Keys backcountry, Mac Travis is faced with a situation that could ruin his idyllic lifestyle. To stay on the island that has been his refuge, he must work outside the authorities, who want to use the explosion as an excuse to take his home away.
Mac’s investigation leads him down a path he never expected, and when he discovers the motivation of the perpetrator, he’s forced into a dangerous situation—with no help coming.

A woman’s plea to find her missing husband sends Special Agent Kurt Hunter down a road he doesn’t want to go.
For all its pristine beauty, Biscayne National Park can be deadly for those lost and unprepared. Open water and inhospitable islands are the most obvious obstacles in a life or death battle, but there is something even more dangerous than nature—man.
The search leads to the mangrove-lined shores of the barrier islands, where smugglers and pirates have lurked for centuries. With the clock ticking on finding the man alive, Kurt and his team take to the backwaters of Biscayne Bay to find him.

Within sight of Marathon, Florida, lies an island left to its own devices. While its harbor is picture-postcard perfect, abandoned and hurricane-ravaged Boot Key has a secret hiding deep in its mangrove tunnels and derelict fishing shacks. With its only bridge deemed too costly to maintain and its center span removed, Boot Key is accessible only by water. The authorities give the few residents a wide berth--until Mac Travis, working a salvage job, discovers the body of an old friend. His search for justice leads him down a road of murder and deceit.
Packed with scenic locations, boating, fishing, diving, and the usual cast of Conch Republic characters, Wood’s Honor will take you on a wild ride through the underbelly of Florida Keys counterculture.
Skyrocketing boat sales have made the waters of South Florida increasingly dangerous by turning quiet backwater coves into venues for huge sandbar parties—and not everyone is there for a good time. Along with the fun-seeking crowds comes the worst elements of Miami society. When a boat is found adrift in the national park with the body of a DEA agent aboard, Special Agent Kurt Hunter is caught in the crossfire between the city’s seedy underbelly and the natural habitat he’s sworn to protect.
To solve the murder, Kurt must investigate the in-crowd, only to find the case leads him deep into the sometimes dark history of the park’s out-islands. To make matters worse, he’s once again forced to navigate the political maze of the warring agencies involved.
