A quiet, beautifully filmed, strange little gem of a movie

I stumbled across Still and couldn't tell much from the trailer, but was intrigued enough by the mixed reviews to rent it. It doesn't easily fit into any genre, but it's definitely NOT a hack-and-slash-evil-mountain-people flick, so if that's what you're looking for, look elsewhere. It's clearly filmed on a minimal budget, but the writing, acting, and imagery are all solid. Some of the shots look like moving paintings, and the complexity of human passions and motives plays out with impressive sophistication on the faces of the three young leads, against a subtle soundscape of cicadas and rustling leaves. The plot is unpredictable without being irritatingly absurd or internally inconsistent, and it has the ghostly vibe of a well-told Appalachian folktale. If you don't pay close attention you'll have no idea what's going on, but if you do, it's the kind of story that lingers like an evocative dream.

There is some sex and violence, but nothing too explicit; if this were rated, it would probably be PG-13.

Good acting and story line. It's a good movie and pretty easy to understand what's going on and follow despite some of the other comments.

A mystery set in the Appalachians.

Great acting, well-made film. Well told tale. I only part I didn't like was the upbeat stuff set in the past.

The premise of the movie was okay, the acting was okay but it left you wondering about how it was possible exactly. Left you to speculate.
