With their hearts' desires on the line, nothing can stop the Montana Men
Sadie Higgins has a bad habit of bailing her brother out of trouble. But when he rustles a herd of cattle from the tough, honorable Kendrick brothers, it's Sadie who's in for it. Because the cowboy tracking them down is big, silent, and forbidding as hell.
Rory Kendrick is on the hunt to find out who's been stealing from him. When he stumbles upon Sadie in the woods, he barely recognizes the quiet, vulnerable beauty who has always taken his breath away. His mission shifts in an instant: He will do anything it takes to keep her safe . . . and make her his.
Sadie has always protected her family—no matter the price. But when Rory ropes her heart, she's forced to take a look at her life and make a dangerous choice—one that could cost, or gain, her everything.

For a heroine dealing with so much sadness and violence, Sadie is both strong-willed and kindhearted. She remembers the sweet boy her younger brother used to be before drugs warped his mind and wants to help set him back on the right path despite his consistently making the same mistakes. She isn't hopelessly idealistic. She sees him for the junkie that he is and is well aware of all that helping him has cost her, but family is so important to her that she can't just toss him aside, or be the instrument of his downfall.
One thing I really loved about Sadie is that when she sees Rory withdrawing or becoming quiet she goes right up to him, pokes him in the chest, and tells him to stop it. She's direct and loving, and makes sure they're both accountable and open about their feelings. I love that they talk about their issues and face them head on. God save us from the overused trope of needless misunderstandings caused by heroes and heroines not talking about things.
If you love the silent, broody type with an honorable, kind heart and the kind of muscular frame you just want to climb, then Rory is the cowboy of your dreams. He's big, protective, family-oriented and his rare smiles completely light up his face. It also doesn't hurt that he's great with his hands and picks Sadie up like she's as light as a feather. #BookBoyfriendGoals
This series is just so wonderful and every time I read the next book I'm reminded of how supremely satisfying Jennifer Ryan's work is. There's just so much excitement, genuine emotion and fantastic pacing that you can't put her books down. Plus, she sure knows how to turn the heat up. I love how wonderfully developed her characters are and the little world she's building with this series. I'm so excited to discover more of her Montana men and get Colt's story. I honestly can't say enough good things about STONE COLD COWBOY and the series as a whole. Just go read it! If you like suspense and sexy, protective cowboys you'll be in heaven.
Disclosure: I received this book free in exchange for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions shared are my own.
Rory Kendrick is the eldest of three brothers. He takes his responsibilities as role model, parent, big brother and protector seriously. He oversee's a successful cattle ranch and cares for his g'father. He works. And he works. And that's all he does....all the time. And he's tired of being smothered under responsibility, yet he's driven to always get the job done and keep the ranch thriving and surviving. And then he meets Sadie Higgins.....
This was a sweetly predictable romantic story a young woman (age anyone??) who has built up such strong enforcements of protection around herself that she's mistrustful...and of a cowboy (anyone know his age??) who is a little bit shy and hides behind a gruff, intense exterior. It has its serious and harsh moments surrounding the drug world...but the story doesn't get too involved with that. The romantic moments were tastefully written but a little too tame for me. Very sweet. Still, I enjoyed this story. Still not sure if I'll continue on with Colt's story.

The plotline is engaging but does stall a bit in places before picking up again.
The circular thinking gets boring by the third time and there are parts when the female lead, Sadie, really is too stupid to live.
Rory is sweet and rounded but again, much like Sadie, is totally unable to give voice to thought and emotion which subsequently makes the reading experience a bit frustrating.
There are several sex scenes, some swearing and a horrific torture scene at the start of the book.
There are a few errors.
If you are a fan of the genre I have no problem recommending the book.

Chasing after the men that have stolen a lot of cattle from his family's ranch, Rory McKendrick never expected to find the woman he's been obsessing over from afar, tied to a tree, stripped down to her underwear and left for dead. Choosing to save her life over getting back the cattle is easy, but there's more to it than that, especially when she insists that she'll pay him back every last dime for the cattle her brother has stolen. Rory doesn't need her money, but he's determined to let her do whatever it takes. If only to keep an eye on her as well as keep her safe, especially when she makes the hardest decision of her life, which will more than likely put her life in even more danger than it already is.
What a powerful, emotional and captivating read Ms. Ryan has penned that no doubt is one of the best stories I've read this year, and that's saying something because I've read almost fifty books already. I loved the way it started, even if I cried for what Sadie had to go through, but just knowing someone would come to her rescue made the tearful journey worth it.
Everything about this book drew me in, and kept me quickly flipping the pages. The character's back stories, their emotions and reactions, the perfect blend of teasing and intense dialogue, it made me more and more determined to learn what Sadie and Rory had to go through to finally achieve their happy ever after. Because if any hero and heroine deserved one, it was definitely this couple.
As for the dialogue, I loved the interactions between Rory and Sadie. He has every reason to want to protect her after being the one to find her. That in itself couldn't have been easy, especially since he'd like to get to know her better. Then there's the choices Sadie has to make that aren't easy for her. She's been protecting her brother for so long, and it seems she doesn't know how to stop, because she's afraid of losing him.
I really liked both Sadie and Rory, as well as the secondary characters, especially Rory's family. They're very close, and will do anything to help each other. Knowing how much Rory likes Sadie, it brings them together even more. Besides, with Sadie in Rory's life, it seems likely that he'll be the first to deliver on what their grandfather wants for them -- love, marriage and a family of his own.
Sadie is strong and brave. She's had to deal with so much over the years, always bailing her brother out of trouble whenever he's managed to get himself in it. Dealing with her brother, and the fact that she's going to lose her father in the near future to his illness starts to take its toll on her. And as the story progressed, it made me feel more and more sorry for her to be in the situation she's found herself in. Why should she keep helping her brother when she knows he'll never do what she suggests? Is she naïve in believing that he may change because she wants him to? Possibly, but at the same time, I could understand why she wanted to save him because he's her family.
While with Rory, there was so much to like about him. At first, he seems very intimidating, but the more I read, the more I discovered him to be the complete opposite. He's kind, considerate, tenacious in wanting to keep Sadie safe, even if it means he has to betray her trust to get her brother. He's also very hard-working and the glue that keeps his family together. As the oldest, he's put his life on hold to care for his brothers, but not anymore. Not now that he has a shot at happiness with Sadie, and that's what I liked most about him. That he was willing to take a chance, despite the fact that -- at times -- he almost ruined things between them with worrying about their future.
Hot sex scenes illustrated the strong chemistry that was there from the moment Rory rescued her. Neither are certain that they're ready for a relationship when there's so much uncertainty surrounding them at first, especially with the danger to Sadie's life. Still, there's no denying their growing feelings, especially when the unexpected happens, and Sadie needs to put herself first for a change. No longer can she afford to help her brother when he doesn't want to help himself.
Overall, Ms. Ryan has impressed me with this fourth book in her Montana Men series where I laughed and cried, but most of all was pleased by how the story ended with the epilogue. Indeed, it had me cheering for this couple when their big secret was revealed to those they're close with. I would recommend Stone Cold Cowboy by Jennifer Ryan, if you enjoy romantic suspense, or a story where the main characters go through a lot and definitely deserve their happy ever after.
