I noticed a reoccurring theme in the Old Testament and it made me wonder if God is going to punish our country in same way that he punished Israel for turning its back on Him. Solomon was definitely my favorite person in the Old Testament and the reason is because he asked for knowledge and wisdom and not material possession which he received from God anyways.
Another part that I was not aware of in the New Testament was the full story about the Apostle Paul and when he was arrested by the Romans and forced to give an account. It was very interesting to read how this Jew, who persecuted those who followed The Way, would become one of the most ardent Christians of that time.
This does NOT replace a regular Bible for those who know the Bible and/or are involved in Bible studies. This is ideal for its purpose, though, which is to acquaint the reader with the stories in the Bible -- the history, the prophecies, the books of wisdom. Very well done.
For all, the book has value.

None of it corresponds to the scene of a public figure speaking today and by tea time it is written down for the online newspaper, not to mention several video records of his or her speech or actions. The 'Recordings' we have of the words and actions of characters in the Bible are very very long distance from the original incident.
We can easily get locked in two options in our response to the Bible, sitting in judgement in comfortable 21st Century armchairs .
Some commentators, who it appears are especially given lots of air time on TV, Say that somethings are preposterous, or very unlikely eg. .Jonah the reluctant prophet coming out of a whale's stomach, Samson in Judges 15:4-5 So he went out and caught three hundred foxes and tied them tail to tail in pairs. He then fastened a torch to every pair of tails, ... setting fire to Philistine crops in retribution. Therefore the Biblical records are all about God made in man's image, with nothing in them to respond to apart from ancient tales and myths, basically made up and parables encouraging us to be nicer people.
The other group is believers who keep saying the Bible is inerrant, cannot conceivably have any issues, won't investigate archaeology, oral traditions, cultural influences, and will say that the Genesis Story can only describe 6 of 24 hour periods for the development of the World. This blocks out exploring the option that it might be as process of 600, 6,000 600,000 years and actually does the time scale matter? What does matter is the critical view that intelligent design was involved in the poorly understood process of how stuff came about ,in contrast to mere natural selection of genetically random mutations, a traditional evolutionary theory, that has no place for 'God's involvement, and not much purpose for living. Stepping out of an 'inerrancy bunker' it is actually amazing to see that True scientists will accept how little we do know, and will continue to try to fit different models to the evidence we believe we have at the moment.
How about the model that a powerful supernatural force has given us a fascinating world to explore, but leaves us guessing, so we don't have to prematurely rule anything out, The Bible as recorded doesn't appear to claim to be a Scientific text book to describe to any or all generations, what? has happened, what? questions about life, but significantly, the timeless Why? questions about life.
Moving on and not getting over focused on the Genesis account, there is a lot more Bible to explore in a new way through reading ' The Story', think it was Mark Twain who said ' its not the bits of the Bible I don't understand that worry me, its the bits I do understand... Along with a section of challenging questions at the end, I encourage any individual with an open mind to get a copy, read the Story with fresh eyes and get together with others to have lively discussions of what they read, dip into cultural and geographic understanding of what you find in Bible! Lots of people find especially the Old testament intensely challenging, and are put off .. its a scarey place, an amazing place of struggles, a brutal place at times, as well as sometimes heartwarming, cheering the overcomer. Looking at the World News today, apart from the cosy armchairs we sometimes sit in, the insecurity, injustice for many, lying, bullying, greed, betrayal and struggles are really, today, not much different from Biblical times!
