Story or Die: How to Use Brain Science to Engage, Persuade, and Change Minds in Business and in Life Kindle Edition
A step-by-step guide to using the brain’s hardwired need for story to achieve any goal, from the author of Wired for Story
Whether you’re pitching a product, saving the planet, or convincing your kids not to text and drive, story isn’t just one way to persuade. It’s the way. It’s built into the architecture of the brain, and has been since early humans gathered around the camp fire, trying to figure out how to outsmart the lion next door.
In Story or Die, story coach Lisa Cron sets out to decode the power of story, first by examining how the brain processes information, translates it into narrative, and then guards it as if your life depends on it. Armed with that insight, she focuses on how to find your real target audience and then pinpoint their hidden resistance. Finally, she takes you, step-by-step, through the creation of your own story, one that allows your audience to overcome their resistance and take up your call to action, not because you told them to, but because they want to.
That is the power of story. Use it wisely.
“Lisa Cron is authoritative, compelling, and always worth listening to. If storytelling is important to your work in any way, Story or Die is essential reading.”—Andy Goodman, director, The Goodman Center
“Lisa Cron has studied the science and architecture of powerful stories for decades. In Story or Die, she translates her knowledge into a compelling storytelling guide for anyone with an idea to spread or a cause to advance. If you want to change how others see the world, then this book will show you how.”—Bernadette Jiwa, creator of The Story Skills Workshop

Recently, I reached the point of saying, "Okay. Enough is enough."
That's why I read this book. And continued turning the pages, highlighting as I read, even when it felt like I was reading a textbook from grad school. (Yes, this book is THAT loaded with information.)
Along the way, author Lisa Cron's advice managed to get past my defenses and show me - clearly - that I've been marketing to the wrong audience. I need to make a 180-degree shift in what I write and how I market it.
Frankly, Ms. Cron's research - shared in detail in this book - made it impossible to shrug off her insights. The science was there, layer upon layer. Studies, numbers, and the whole nine yards.
I couldn't ignore it.
Admittedly, it took a lot of self-talk - and chocolate chip cookies - for me to acknowledge my past mistakes.
But I did.
And then I read "Stories That Stick," to understand how to write (and market) for my REAL audience.
So, after blundering for years, I'm finally on track with books that my readers are eager to buy and tell their friends about.
That's a huge relief, and it started by reading "Story or Die," and trudging through it - often with a sour expression on my face - doing exactly what Ms. Cron suggested.
I rarely give a book five stars (unless I'm in one of my giddy-happy moods), but this book earned all five stars and probably a lot more, if I could add them.
If your career, business, or marketing efforts aren't producing the results you expect or want, read this book. All of it. It may answer a LOT of questions, but - more importantly - put you on the path to success, and far more satisfaction with your work.
This newest one is her best because it builds on her recognition of the ways in which stories motivate us all. Lisa Cron knows how to fascinate an audience. When you've read STORY OR DIE you will too.

So I was delighted to find she had already done the adaptation work for me, by writing Story or Die. Lisa obviously has done her research on what we need: several chapters on how to story for yourself instead of just focusing on mostly theory like so many other business related books.
Before even writing my first story I realised how I could make my brand more inspiring, which I didn’t know before and no marketing advice could have got me here like Lisa did.
And my stories are so much better now too. She makes it easy to be effective!
As usual, Lisa Cron's book is a gem and I was delighted to receive this one!
We dive into the importance of storytelling and how to craft a great story that will engage your reader and make them change their mind in a right way. It was the perfect book tor read since I want to become a writer and a copywriter! A great summary of what I learned in books about these two subjects.
Thank you for this gem, Lisa Cron! I can't wait to dive deeper into my notes and craft a better now!
