5.0 out of 5 stars Truly Something for Everyone Inside
By An Entertainment Connoisseur on August 30, 2021
When it comes to science fiction, space opera in particular, I have a pretty specific set of expectations. I buy a lot of collections that fail to grab me for one reason or another, but every once in a while I find one that really checks all the boxes for me.

I guess because it is so varied a collection, it's a bit hard to review. There are 12 tales in total and they cover a very wide spread of sub-genres. You have some murder mysteries, some action pieces, a couple that touch upon horror. There's your artificial intelligence, cryo sleep, bounty hunters, spies and pirates. In short, you really feel like you toured a galaxy by the time you finish the collection.

To me the real deal sealer, though, is the respect given to the space opera genre as a whole. You get the feeling a lot of love went into this piece as there is a subtle narrative that flows across the material. I was not familiar with the editor before this anthology but have since read some of the other science fiction he's written here for Kindle and recognize his influence. It's always intelligent in a way that could be plausible. Even if the subject itself happens to be pulpy or far reaching, the science is always grounded, well explained. This subtlety goes a long way in stitching together what are surely tales of a wide variety of tones, themes and styles. I guess what I mean to say is that Strange Orbits manages to feel like a single work, rather than a hodgepodge of stories jammed into a single book.

Do I have a favorite tale? Tough to say. There were a few that really shine. What makes this one so rare, though, is that there aren't really any bad ones to be found! This alone puts the book in very unique company. As a bonus the print version is quite gorgeous. I'm proud to have it upon my shelf.
