I liked it until I was convicted with Biblical truth.
Bill Johnson's theology is problematic. This shows in the subtitle of his book: "How to Release the Hidden Power of God." God's power is not hidden from us. If we walk by the Holy Spirit, we already have God's power in us. All we have to do is live in God's power. On the contrary, Bill believes this: "One of the primary truths that Jesus proved is that it is simply impossible to represent God accurately without demonstrations of power." Inaccurate. Jesus demonstrated his supernatural power on earth because of the immense unbelief around him not because that was the only way to do it. It was certainly not the primary reason. We are called to evaluate Christians by their fruit not by their miraculous powers. We are proven to be God's children through our love for one another. Not by performing miracles. Bill further insists that Christians should demand spiritual gifts and miraculous powers from God. He says that speaking in tongues is a given for every Christian. We just need to ask for it. Once again, this is unbiblical. God chooses to give these gifts as He pleases. We can't demand it. The Bible also clearly states that if we are blessed with spiritual gifts, it's not for our sake, it's for the benefit of those around us.
Bill misses another point by misquoting Scripture: "He who speaks in tongues edifies himself..." 1 Corinthians 14:4. Here's the actual context: "A person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally, but one who speaks a word of prophecy strengthens the entire church." 1 Corinthians 14:4. There's a clear hierarchy in God's gifts and the point here isn't to edify yourself through tongues. The Corinthians, like Bill, were obsessed with the gift of tongues, so Paul corrects them this way: Dear brothers and sisters, if I should come to you speaking in an unknown language, how would that help you? But if I bring you a revelation or some special knowledge or prophecy or teaching, that will be helpful." 1 Corinthians 14:6.
Let me quote a couple other examples of unbiblical theology from this book.
"The will of God instinctively becomes the will of believers through intimate relationship with God." At surface level, this almost sounds true. When the Holy Spirit enters our hearts, He gives us the desire to do God's will. But we don't know what God's will is until we search the Scriptures. Jesus never told people to "instinctively" follow God's will. He instructed them with Scriptural references. The will of God is revealed throughout Scripture. Here is the most important one. Jesus replied: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than these." Matthew 12:31 and Matthew 22:37
Bill claims that understanding is not needed to obey God's will. "Thankfully, you don't need to understand the Word in order to show the Lord that you trust His Word as truth." Bill uses the story of Mary and her encounter with the angel as she was about to conceive God's Son. Bill argues that she accepted God's truth without knowing how He would accomplish that task. To a certain extent, that's true. Even we can't comprehend conception without a biological father. It's truly a miracle. However, Mary understood the prophecy about the coming Messiah ."the Lord himself will give you the sign. Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel (which means ‘God is with us’)." Isaiah 7:14. Mary believed the prophecy and the prophecy came to pass with her. Trusting the angel who delivered God's message was an outcome of her understanding the Scriptures.
"He (God) is more than ready to convince us that He is worthy of our praise. " God doesn't need to "convince" us of anything. He knows He's glorious and perfect in every way. He reveals Himself to us and then we can choose to agree or disagree with Him. But He doesn't need to prove Himself. This seems to be the way Bill instructs believers as well. Somehow we need to prove ourselves worthy for God to accept us. That is completely a works-based theology. That is exactly what we should deny as true followers of Christ.
I could give countless examples from this book that directly go against Scriptural truth, but I just wanted to quote a few for introduction to Bill's theology. No, I would not recommend this book to anyone unless you want to point out wrong Bill Johnson's teaching is. Bill mixes the truth with a lot of false assumptions (he misquotes Scripture again and again, and he also doesn't quote any other reputable Christian sources either) which makes him a theologically dangerous teacher. He's leading many astray and it grieves my heart. I almost fell for him too, so I would caution everyone to test every spirit and see if it is God's truth. We're warned in the Bible against false teachers, and that reality hasn't changed. We need to be discerning on all levels. Stay vigilant, friends.
*Bill Johnson wrote this book to teach believers how to strengthen themselves in the Lord like David did when he faced trials. If we can strengthen ourselves we are better equipped to pass tests and grow in the Lord until we are trustworthy co- laborers and can fulfill our destiny in the earth. Bill Johnson discusses various strategies in depth that he has personal experience with such as the power of thanksgiving and praise, the power of remembrance and testimony, and turning our very weaknesses and disappointments into weapons for his purpose and springs of life.
*The power of thanksgiving- thanksgiving establishes our focus on God and His reality and denies the enemy's plan influence over us. It sanctifies the situation and puts it into our hands as a weapon to accomplish the very divine purpose the enemy meant to prevent.
* The promises of God should be meditated on . Prophesy does more than tell us what will be, it begins the process of creating it. We must claim, remember, and declare these promises to possess them. We must train our minds to constantly be in agreement with His word over us and not think of ourselves in any other way despite the appearance of our circumstance.
*The power of testimony- testimony is related to the spirit of prophesy and releases an expectation(faith) for it to happen again. Likewise remembering the testimony of Jesus (all He has done) in our lives and history creates a storehouse for us to draw on and grow in strength and faith. We can turn to these remembrances when we are struggling and shift our thinking into praise and expectation.
*We need to know how to protect ourselves, spirits, and mind by fostering healthy relationships and not pouring out of human sympathy when we are not supposed to. We need to focus on God's answers rather than our problems, and not allowing our focus to cause anxiety. We can actively and intentionally remove ourselves from sources of negative focus and seek peace and knowledge of His reality. We need to understand that he has already given us the tools to succeed because God does not set us up to fail and He has already won victory.
