Working as a psych nurse for 2 1/2 decades, I worked with adolescents and adults with depression and anxiety. Anxiety is a tough emotion to feel.
I think this book presents in a very easy to understand way how a young child could deal with anxiety.
The trip that Nick takes with his dad to the mountains brings up some feelings of anxiety about traveling. What if there’s a storm, can he sleep without his favorite toys, etc.
The author delves into the various physical sensations a child might experience with anxiety. Dry mouth, sweaty hands or feeling like he’s going to cry.
I love the technique that the author used by introducing different animals in the forest while Nick, is camping with his dad. Each animal has a helpful way to cope with anxiety.
The raccoon shares about writing down what makes Nick anxious. Then throwing away the paper!
Later Nick meets a singing moose who helps him sing his anxiety away! And a bear who does yoga helping Nick to stretch and relax!
These are great ideas to help cope with anxiety.
This book ends on a positive note as Nick is able to relax and enjoy his time camping with his dad.
“I am stronger than anxiety.” Nick said. “And I won!”
In this delightful story, Nick and his dad are going on a camping trip! Nick is excited about going but then he starts worrying about it until he’s feeling anxious. The symptoms of anxiety are listed which is good so that children can understand that these naturally occur when they’re feeling anxious.
When Nick and his dad get to the forest, Nick goes for a walk while his dad puts up the tent. He meets several animals who tell him what they do when they’re feeling anxious and by the time he gets back to the campsite, he feels great and is ready to have a good time with his dad.
The story is told in rhymes and the illustrations are cute and colorful. I had to laugh at the cute picture of Nick’s dad’s beard. It’s so 2020! I am Stronger than Anxiety is bound to keep the attention of children plus they learn to recognize anxiety and different ways to cope with it.

I'm disappointed, but we'll keep it for the bookshelf I guess.
