Emily had been attempting to break into the world of acting. She got onto a bus full of other people that would be extras for a day and was driving two hours away from Louisville. She was down to her last dollar, and her car was in the shop with no money to get it fixed. She was so tired of calling up her sister and asking for help. Emily got the chance to get a small part working with a horse. She grew up around horses, and loved them. She found out she had to be back at 8 am for the part, but the bus would not be making the trip. Emily made the best of a bad situation, she made a bed out of hay and slept in the barn with the horses. Dan came by to check on the horses before going to bed. He found Emily sleeping, and didn't want to leave her unguarded. Dan had just met Emily that day, and I thought it was so sweet that he slept in a chair nearby Emily to keep her safe. He left before she woke up, so Emily thought no one knew where she had slept. This is how the book started out, and it only gets better from here.
So she decides she wants to be a star, things are not happening, duh, so she winds up showing up as a background person in a movie about 2 hrs. from her home. From the very first, she has no intentions of following any rules, etc. She is going to make her mark no matter how she does it. Rules just don't apply to her. She got on my nerves a bit. But she manages to catch the eye of a world famous horse trainer, known for avoiding actresses and the like. Of course, they are all after him but due to family issues he shies away.
She has a lot of issues as well. There is mystery involved. A groom disappeared 20 years ago and that plays a bit part in the movie. The owner of the racehorse that almost was, and the property, etc. was a skirt chaser in his day and at his current age is still hot for a gal in a wet t-shirt.
I really liked the hero. I was not sure why he was so attracted to the heroine. Don't know his age either. But, all said, it was a cute story, a bit of mystery added a bit to the story, and it had a happy ending and no horses were injured in the making of this story, so I liked it. I would recommend it.
This is a story of a movie being filmed on a Kentucky horse farm featuring a horse that could be modeled after Seabiscuit, or Man-o-War. Aspiring actress Emily Murphy's pressing dilemma is fame vs fortune (love) when she falls for the hunky horse wrangler/trainer, Dan Barrett, but she also desperately wants to see her name on the big screen replete with a speaking part, not just as an extra, or background--but with a union SAG card. I've been background, and it's no picnic. MInd-numbingly long hours and low pay. My old truck (also an extra) got paid more than me on the Nash Bridges set!
Apparently Studs and Stilettos is a sequel to Thoroughbreds and Trailer Trash, but it's a solid standalone book. A good plot, a rollicking read with a murder mystery to be solved. It reminded me of another book I'd read ages ago, Horses and Heroin, and I was delighted to discover that it too was written by the same author. Studs and Stilettos is not dressed in the same racing silks as the incomparable Dick Francis, but it's a memorable read, just the same. I look forward to reading Thoroughbreds and Trailer Trash next.
Loved the setting and the info. about horses and movie-making kept me reading.
I loved how Emily was so concerned about Billy and others (Wally, etc.) who touched her life, and how she made sure Dan kept Barney.
My favorite part of the book was when Emily went back home and saw the house that had replaced the trailer where she and Jenna had lived. I understand how she felt losing her childhood home and being afraid she wouldn't be welcome in the new house Jenna's husband had built for her. I cried when she saw all the mementos Jenna's husband had saved and put into the new house. This is because I am going through my parents' house right now to sell it and I felt exactly the way Emily did yesterday when I went to do some work over there. Hope I can figure out a way to put the things I'm saving into my condo somehow.
Looking forward to reading Book 3!
