About the authors
Hello all! My name is Kevin Howell and I am a jiu-jitsu fanatic who's goal is to help in the growth of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and grappling both through the sharing of deep personal knowledge and practice. My goal is to make the best use of my over 13 years of grappling experience and education/writing background to create the most unique and sought after grappling related books in martial arts. I am the author of two best selling books on the martial arts: Jiu-Jitsu University with Saulo Ribeiro and Drill to Win with Andre Galvao.
When away from writing, I am either teaching college level political science, spending time with my family, or teaching jiu-jitsu at The Jiu-Jitsu League in Long Beach, California (www.TheJiuJitsuLeague.com).

This book is well written and creatively formatted, but not for the beginner.
In my opinion, a grappler with at least year or two under his belt will get the most out of it. It's not so much a step-by-step collection of techniques, but more about building an overall game plan and attitude. I guess that's where they got the idea to write it like a pol/mil tactical handbook.
There are few surprises or techniques that aren't available online, but what makes this book a good value for the intermediate BJJ/grapplng student comes from Camarillo's attacking plans that link together several submissions in one chain.
Camarillo believes that you are a grappler, whether or not you choose to wear the gi --- so the book is a good mix of techniques for each discipline.
In the end it's highly recommended, though not for everyone. For me, it will be my primary workbook for the next year or so.
Cheers.
It is a little hard to read at first, until you get used to the layout.
But for a more advanced bjj practitioners, it will improve submission knowledge. Good book.
What this book has that every other book on the market lacks in comparison is a coherent guide to developing a grappling strategy. It guides the reader from start to finish---choosing a HUB, dveloping attacks from that position, learning to bait your opponent. Everything that this book shows is effective and useful in training.
My one gripe is the layout. And it's not a huge gripe. The benefit of its current layout is that you get to see the entire sequence unbroken; the drawback is that it requires occasional page-flipping to read Dave's breakdown of what happens in conjunction with the images. It helps that what he considers to be the important images are copied next to his explanation at the appropriate place. So really, I just want it all--both the unbroken sequence and the fully reproduced sequence compelte with commentary a la JIU JITSU UNIVERSITY.
All told, though, that's a miniscule problem with a generally fantastic manual. Forget points, forget tournaments. Use this book to win everywhere.
The are lots of submissions demonstrated, mainly armbar variation, however the faux military terms make reading this book a drag and can often cloud important details. They even put me off from picking it up again and going thru it once more.
All in all, there are better istructionals than this one. If you like armbars and Camarillo pick it up, otehrwise you won't miss anything important.

In short, great information for those who have a good positional base already, and want to explore their inner Ronda Rousey, and have the patience to ignore the way it 's written.
