The main character, Faith, returns to the Outer Banks for her grandmother Nan's 90th birthday. Faith has a hard time reconnecting with her sister, Casey, and gets acquainted with her young niece Isabella.
Prior to going directly to the cottage, Faith stops along the beach road at hot dog stand to get something to eat and collect herself. It is there that she sees Jake for the first time and he sparks her interest. She officially meets Jake, the "handyman" , at the cottage. Over time, he brings out in Faith feelings that she thought would never surface again.
This story is about how important family is and creating memories with each other that will last a lifetime.
Overall it was a fine read, but its not the kind of book that spoke to me. It is not something I woudl recommend or read again.
I suppose it's been over a year since I first read a Jenny Hale book, and was an instant fan. However, she seems to be perfecting her craft with each book she turns out. Summer by the Sea is definitely a book that is on par with some of her more popular contemporaries, like Carole Matthews, Ruth Saberton and other fab authors. And the best thing, she's an American with the writing style of a quaint Brit (I'm obsessed with Brit chick lit).
In Summer by the Sea we meet Faith as she is about to go and spend the summer at her families old summer spot (the previous cottage was destroyed and now has been rebuilt). Faith while happy to be reconnecting with her family, is also quite distraught at the thought if being around her sister Cassie after an event years ago left the two sisters at odds.
Her first stop is to visit the old cottage site (at this point it's unknown that she will be spending her summer at her old family home), where she encounters a handsome handyman in Jake Buchanon. Jake and Faith hit it off from the start and begin conversing about deeper subjects than two strangers would normally start discussing.
When Faith and her family realize that they are to spend their summer at their old family home, they are all thrilled beyond words. Faith and Cassie try to make amends, Faith is especially thrown off guard when she discovers that Cassie and Scott are headed for turbulent times and what seems to be an eventual divorce. Unsure of how this news makes her feel, Faith does so,e soul searching.
Jake it seems is popping up everywhere and Faith is drawn to this handsome handyman, but she fears that Cassie has her eyes set on him too.
This was such a delicious book that kept me hanging on to every word. Jenny Hale weaves a beautiful story and creates vibrant characters in which her readers feel an emotional connection to almost immediately.

Will I ever get enough of Jenny Hale’s writing?! One word – NO! Before I even started then book I knew I was going to love it. I absolutely adored Jenny’s debut novel Coming Home For Christmas! She even read an excerpt of it for me in her beautiful accent as part of our Scottish/Virginian accent challenge – yes that is on YouTube!
Onto Jenny’s latest offering then! Faith is travelling to Outer Banks to celebrate her grandmother’s 90th birthday with her family. She is our narrator throughout and quite an easy character to relate to and imagine. I actually found it really easy to picture Faith and Jake because before I’d even started reading Jenny and I had played our favourite game of dream casting her handsome book boyfriends and I managed to come up with someone to play Faith too. In my mind’s eye Faith and Jake were Silver and Ethan from 90210!
Her grandmother’s 90th birthday trip also sees the reunion of Faith and her sister Casey after years of distance and not speaking with one another. I could feel the stress Faith was feeling about their meeting and the potential altercation between them from the start of the book. Faith is a little insecure because of how Casey has acted in the past but I think she really needs a dose of confidence because when she becomes more comfortable in her own skin her confidence seems natural almost like it was just hidden before! There was one particular part of Faith that made me think of Jenny so much! Jenny’s a teacher (in her spare time ha ha), something she has in common with Faith and there is this really cute bit in the story about kids walking back to class and I just picture Jenny doing the same as Faith!
Jake was a funny one! He was gorgeous, as described by both Faith and Casey but he was a little bit lost and caught up in his business, losing sight of what mattered. His relationship with Faith is quite uppy-downy and I felt like I wanted to give him a good shake to make him see what was right in front of him. For the most part he was an absolute gentleman though and I especially liked his grand gesture towards the end of the book! The epilogue is a perfect fit for their story after everything we learn that Faith and Jake have in common.
One of my absolute favourite things about this was the setting. It’s set in Outer Banks, North Carolina – google it because your imagination will go wild. I was reading through the book getting a feeling of de ja vu, getting that sense that I’d been in this place in my imagination before. I had a think about it and I was imagining much the same location as I had when I was reading Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks – googled that too and lo and behold it’s just along the coast from Outer Banks! I love the old charm that the setting had and that feeling of a slow and steady pace to life. Jenny’s description of the place made me want to step out of my living room and straight onto the beach!
The story is a little bit of self-discovery for Faith but it’s also about the importance of family and the importance of taking chances in life, particularly taking every opportunity to tell someone that you love exactly that. I love the message from the book and I am desperate to visit a holiday cottage on the beach now!
I loved the characters, they were all great. The sisters Faith and Casey, their amazing nan who i loved, Mr dishy Jake and sweet adorable little Isabella. It's nan's 90th birthday and there's a family get - together at their childhood beach cottage. So much is expected to happen this summer for Faith, can she rekindle the close bond she once had with her sister? Does she find love? Can she help save a marriage? Go on this journey and find out. Our journey allowed us to share in family, friendship, love, romance, betrayal and forgiveness.
Jenny Hale has transferred her fun and magic to the page which will truly warm your heart. Jenny's writing brings out the importance of belonging to a place and the importance of your loved ones. Every time i pick up a Jenny Hale book i just know that I am going to be pulled into a beautiful, heart-warming story that will leave me gripped and in love...
There was nothing I didn't like about it. It was so well written that all the feelings that Faith had; whether it be hurt, sadness, excitement, love ...... I actually felt those feelings she had By reading them. I think I may even have fallen for Jake 😉
The characters were all easy to take too and i cried at the end, the way everything is described even made me love the cottage and its surroundings.
I think it is a book in some ways that everyone can relate too. Having issues in a family, your first crush, falling for somebody and that feeling that you dread of looking someone who very dear to you.
This book makes you stop and think about life and family and how important they all are.
Thank you for this amazing book. I think I will be reading this again and again xxxxx
