That's not all that's waiting for Dodge. His childhood best friend and former flame, Echo Yazzie, is a true Alaskan--a homesteader, dogsledder, and research guide for the DNR. Most of all, she's living a life Dodge knows could get her killed. One of these days she's going to get lost in the woods again, and his worst fear is that he won't be there to find her.
When one of Echo's fellow researchers goes missing, Echo sets out to find her, despite a blizzard, a rogue grizzly haunting the woods, and the biting cold. Plus, there's more than just the regular dangers of the Alaskan forests stalking her . . .
Will Dodge be able to find her in time? And if he does, is there still room for him in her heart?
Sunrise is the first explosive volume in a new nail-biting series from USA Today bestselling author Susan May Warren.

About the Author
From the Back Cover
After a terrible family fight, pilot Dodge Kingston left home to join the Air Force. A decade later, he's headed back to the destiny that awaits him as heir to Sky King Ranch. But that's not all that's waiting for him at home.
Echo Yazzie is a true Alaskan woman--a homesteader, dogsledder, and research guide for the DNR. After her childhood best friend and former flame, Dodge, fled Denali, she settled into life on the Alaskan range. She's made her peace with being left behind--by her mother and by Dodge. And she's strong enough to live without them.
When one of Echo's fellow researchers goes missing, Echo sets out to find her, despite a blizzard, a rogue grizzly haunting the woods, and the biting cold. What she doesn't know is that there are more than just the regular dangers of the Alaskan forests stalking her . . .
As Dodge sets out to find Echo, he can't ignore the feelings he still has for her. But will he be able to find her in time? And if he does, is there still room for him in her heart?

About the author

Growing up in Minneapolis and attending the U of MN, I learned to love city life, although I'm a woodsy girl at heart. Or maybe I'm an adventurer -- having lived and traveled all over the world, including Siberia Russia as a missionary for eight years. Probably that's why my characters can't sit still, and seem to get into one scrape after another -- they're too much like me! I love God, my family, my country, my church, and feel privileged every day to be able to write stories.
Here's my "Official" Bio.
With over 1 million books sold, critically acclaimed novelist Susan May Warren is the Christy, RITA and Carol award-winning author of over seventy-five novels with Revell, Tyndale, Barbour, Steeple Hill and Summerside Press. Known for her compelling plots and unforgettable characters, Susan has written contemporary and historical romances, romantic-suspense, thrillers, rom-com and Christmas novellas.
With books translated into eight languages, many of her novels have been ECPA and CBA bestsellers, were chosen as Top Picks by Romantic Times, and have won the RWA's Inspirational Reader's Choice contest and the American Christian Fiction Writers Book of the Year award.
Of her books, Publisher’s Weekly has written, “Warren lays bare her characters’ human frailties, including fear, grief, and resentment, as openly as she details their virtues of love, devotion, and resiliency. She has crafted an engaging tale of romance, rivalry, and the power of forgiveness.”
And Library Journal adds, “Warren's characters are well-developed and she knows how to create a first rate contemporary romance…”
Susan is also a nationally acclaimed writing coach, teaching at conferences around the nation and winner of the 2009 American Christian Fiction Writers Mentor of the Year award. Everything I love about Susan May Warren’s books is evident in Sunrise…a strong, handsome hero with a military background, fast-paced action filled with danger, family drama, and a swoony romance. The publisher classifies it as contemporary romance, but it is so much more than your typical contemporary romance. Sunrise made my top 10 list of 2021 (since I was blessed with the opportunity to read an advanced copy prior to its release).
As readers follow the Kingston triplets throughout the series, it will be fun to see who they pick as their favorite Kingston brother. Sunrise is highly recommended for readers of action filled contemporary romance.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell and was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine.
I'm really looking forward to reading book 2. Thank you Ms Warren 🙂🙂🙂
Of course, if there is no conflict, there's no story. Susie did a great job on that, too (as usual). In some of her previous books, she doesn't have quite the right balance of external and internal conflicts. Here, I thought the balance was great. Just when the emotional arc with Dodge and Echo was getting a little long, we'd get an encounter with a rogue grizzly or an update on the missing Peyton. And just when the characters had been focusing for a while on external survival, we'd get some great emotional and spiritual development. In fact, because of the survival threads, the emotional ones are some of Susie's strongest lately.
I loved getting to know Dodge and Echo, and I loved how Susie plumbed their depths. In fact, plumbing the depths was, for me, the best part of Sunrise. That is, I thought I knew going on what Echo and Dodge's arcs were going to be--your basic "mommy and daddy issues," with the military and Alaskan wilderness thrown in. However, both arcs are a hundred times deeper than that. I found myself putting the book down to pray a few times, because I saw myself and the lies I believed in both characters. I'm not "over it" or "fixed" or anything, but I commend Susie for using fictional characters to provide real insight and conviction. Her characters prove over and over how well she knows the human heart, and the heart of God for His people.
The suspense element is well done; in fact, part of me is still mad at that cliffhanger. I don't think I can wait until June! (JUNE, seriously? After telling me Colt was in THAT kind of trouble)? Sometimes I felt like the story moved too much between suspenseful plot points, which made some of them thin. For instance, I was totally on board with finding Peyton--and then my attention was jerked to a Jane Doe. I wanted to know more about what made Charlie tick as a "Grizzly Adams" type, and whether Echo loved the bears and other animals as much as her dad and Peyton did. But while it sounded like she did, that thread dropped in and out a lot. And as for Peyton as a missing person...well, that wrapped up a bit too neatly.
All that said, Sunrise is still a strong book, whose setting in particular is still stuck in my head. I cannot wait for Sunburst, because it's going to take me to a totally different place, and I can't wait to see what Susie does with it. In the meantime though, I definitely recommend Sunrise--best enjoyed where it's warm!
