None had children of their own, so they all basically adopted Blanche’s niece as their daughter. When one dies, they all come together to mourn her. Throw in a handsome preacher who is content to preach or serve in a soup kitchen & 2 widowers who are lonesome & a crippled rooster & vodka drinking cockatiel, & you’ve got a heartwarming story that takes place during the Christmas holidays.

No spoilers. The story, writing & narration were all special & well done. I mostly listened, so I can't comment on the editing - but I noticed very few errors.

The MCs were all relatable ; I loved the laughter in their tears. I loved the hero & heroine's honesty & strength. I loved the pace and texture of the story & the real lives they "lived". But I was disappointed in the quality of their faith & walk at the end. I found it worth the read but wouldn't recommend it for young people. Language & adult challenges abound even though it is a mostly clean read.

Once I started reading I didn’t want to stop until I finished the book and then I wanted to know more about Sissy, Luke, Ina Mae, Gussie and the other folks in Newton Texas.

I love all the characters Carolyn puts in her books. Even the animals are so fun. This was a fabulous book. I love almost all the characters, Gussie. Ina Mae, Sissy, Luke, Jimmy, Paul and of course Aunt Bee. I’ve had a friend since kindergarten so I understand sisters of the heart!! Gussie, Ina Mae and Blanche have been friends since they were ten so they were through a lot together. Blanche dies suddenly from a heart attack that puts everyone in a tailspin. Sissy is her niece that has inherited everything. Gussie and Ina Mae want to keep her in town so they match her up with the town preacher, Luke. They fall hard and fast for each other. Perfect book!!

This sounds like one of Brown's titles..... Close but no cigar! A small town iconoclast dies, and leaves her two best friends with a hole in their club, as well as in their hearts. When the woman's niece comes for the funeral she receives way more than she bargained for. Where she is known in her office as Martina, in Newton, she is called Sissy. She finds that Sissy is smarter, more capable and more comfortable as Sissy in Newton. The fact that there's an incredibly handsome preacher is a plus. My title refers to the downfall of the well-established propriety of the church, and many of the good people are happy about it.

Life's ups and downs is a story of some of the folks in Newton, Texas. There is the Sunshine Club that consists of Gussie, Ina Mae and now the dearly departed Blanche. There is Susie who has arrived to settle up her aunt Blanche's estate. She only plans to be in Newton for six weeks and then go back to her home and job in Beau Bridge, Louisiana. Then there was Luke who is the pastor of their local church. Also in the town is Elvira who is pure evil. She is the town gossip and also a hypochondriac.

Luke and Susie felt an instant connection when they first met. But Susie's mother had warned her away from pastors. Now, you know you will be rooting for them but things do not come easy for them. You will find yourself falling in love with Newton. I loved every minute of this book and really didn't want it to end.

This is one of the most boring, going nowhere, stories I have read. I also found it quite odd how much the characters, although elderly women, were portrayed as people who drank alcohol like teenagers. Worse, there is an alcoholic Parakeet who likes to drink vodka! I got about halfway into the book and found it so utterly boring, so I just had to stop reading it. I've read many novels recently, and never felt the need to stop reading any of them. But this?!
