Editorial Reviews

Review

...a must have for any library that has the DC Super Pets books. It breaks down everything you want to know about the superpets with great illustrations and text that you will enjoy reading with the kiddos.-- "NetGalley Review"

A fine additon to the DC Super pets series. So many charcacters, you can now look them up much easier. A must have for our collection.-- "NetGalley Review"

At the risk of overstating things, I may have just read the single greatest book of all time, Capstone's DC Super-Pets Character Encyclopedia, a compendium of more than 200 heroic and villainous pets, compiled mainly from the line of Art Baltazar-illustrated chapter books for young readers.-- "Robot 6, Comic Book Resources"

From the table of contents, which features the tiny face of each pet instead of its name, to the splashy endpapers squeezing the more than 200 pets into a group portrait, Korté and Baltazar's (Superman Family Adventures, 2013) compendium of all things superpet is a visual feast of bright colors, jauntily exaggerated lines, and cheerfully cute faces. . . .Peppered with fun facts, jokes, and handy guides to power rings and the different colors of kryptonite, this browsable handbook is a treasure trove for burgeoning superhero lovers.-- "Booklist"

I know our young patrons are quite fond of superheroes, so it's nice to see a book like this one, designed just for them. You don't have to worry about content that is inappropriate for even the youngest reader. . . .I'm sure our little hero fans will get a kick out of this one.-- "NetGalley Review"

If you have children interested in super heroes or just enjoy the Tiny Titans world of comics this is a good pick for them. I think they'll enjoy it.-- "Musekicker's Reading Place blog"

If you've ever wanted to know more about DC's super pets, wondered what kind of pet Green Lantern or Wonder Woman would have, or just love animals in general, then this book is for you.-- "SLJ's Good Comics for Kids blog"

It taught me about the super pets and their owners. And I liked mainly everything about it.-- "Place of Reads blog"

It's a really cute book for kids. The illustrations are super fun and entertaining. I would definitely get this book if your kids are into superheroes, or the DC Super Pets series.-- "The Perfect Storm blog"

Kids who love DC should love this book.-- "NetGalley Review"

Loved this! Capstone has done a wonderful job expanding the DC Universe for kids of all ages.-- "NetGalley Review"

Moms (& closet comic book fans), keep an eye out for this book - it'll be well worth any purchase price!-- "Snarky Mom Reads blog"

Stunned is the only word that can describe my reaction to the DC Superpets! Character Encyclopedia by Steve Korté illustrated by Art Baltazar. . . .Every full color page contains a delightful discovery of comic book heroes and their pets. It opens with a crowd shot of DC heroes with their pets -- that's 331 figures to identify. No worries, there is a key on the last page.-- "EarlyWord Kids blog"

Super-Pets is a clever look at the world of superheroes. Students will be attracted to the bright cover and comic theme.-- "NetGalley Review"

Take a closer look at the cover and you get an idea just how many animal characters are included here!-- "Flayrah blog"

The cool thing is each super pet has their own full-sized page in the book that lists their stats like favorite food, secret bio, who their super hero owner is, and who their allies and foes are. By the end of the book I was wondering why this hasn't been made into a game yet. I know it would be a great companion for kids to use to figure out what animals they need to collect and how they would compete against another super pet.-- "San Francisco Book Review"

The thing I really love about Picture Window's DC Super-Pets books is Baltazar's character designs and drawings, and this book is full of both.-- "Unshelved Book Club"

The Super Pets have long been under-rated and ignored. I love that this encyclopedia is dedicated to them. It's full of information and wonderful images.-- "NetGalley Review"

This book is great! I read it together with my kids and they had a great time with it! They loved that it included some of their favorite heroes and pets from Super-Pets, Tiny Titans and all the DC Comics. The art is typical of Art Baltazar's work - super fun and cute! There are all kinds of cool backstories for the pets and even a section describing the comics cannon origins of some of the characters. I think any child or adult would love to read this fun book!-- "Amethyst Daydreams blog"

This graphic novel is geared for ages 6-8; however this is a must have for any DC comics enthusiast. . . .There is an entire series of chapter books staring the super pets. This works as a guide or a companion book with the chapter books.-- "Raven Heather's Kingdom blog"

This is a fun collection of 200 super-pets (both hero and villain) with all the information you would like to know about them. I was pretty confident that I knew my super heroes, but I found out about pets I had never heard of before. . . .With so many super characters to keep track of, this is a handy guide for any fan.-- "The Fairview Review blog"

This is an awesome comic book all about the super pets and evil villian pets. It explains their costumes, and which fits best with each super hero.-- "Test Try Results blog"

What I like about the DC Super-Pets Character Encyclopedia is how easy it is to find a super-pet. There is a picture index, a text index, size charts, and a full spread super-pet group illustration in the front of the book. In the back is a blank group image with numbers indicating what super-pet is where in the front group image. . . .If you or your child likes Saturday morning cartoons or live to watch the Cartoon Network, you will enjoy turning off the television and reading this encyclopedia.-- "Kid Lit Reviews blog"

From Booklist

It’s a bird . . . It’s a plane . . . It’s a dog! And a cat, a horse, a kangaroo, an anglerfish, and hundreds of other superhero and supervillain pets from the DC universe. From the table of contents, which features the tiny face of each pet instead of its name, to the splashy endpapers squeezing the more than 200 pets into a group portrait, Korté and Baltazar’s (Superman Family Adventures, 2013) compendium of all things superpet is a visual feast of bright colors, jauntily exaggerated lines, and cheerfully cute faces. Each animal (or alien or robot) gets a half- or full-page spread, featuring a large rendering of the character; details about its powers and special gear; its species, birthplace, and favorite food (Batman’s dog, Ace, eats “crime fighter crunchies”); and a much smaller picture of its superhero owner. Peppered with fun facts, jokes, and handy guides to power rings and the different colors of kryptonite, this browsable handbook is a treasure trove for burgeoning superhero lovers. Grades 1-3. --Sarah Hunter --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great book, POOR Quality
By Danny Scarbro on April 17, 2017
The kiddo asked for this book for weeks after a friend showed it to her as school, and she saved her allowance to purchase it. It arrived on time, even though the delivery was set to arrive on Easter Sunday. She immediately began reading it, made it to page 96, and the pages started falling out. There was no ripping or bending of the spine, the glue just separated from the back. She thinks she did something wrong, whereas we are disappointed the book couldn't last one full day, let alone a complete read through.
She loves the contents and could not stop talking about it, so I suggest it for kids that love Pokémon and comic books in general.

3.0 out of 5 stars Extremely poor binding
By momof7 on September 27, 2017
My 6 and 8 year olds love this book. We had borrowed it from the library and I decided to get them their own. Unfortunately this one was a paperback and did not even last four days of occasional use. I will hole punch it and put it in a binder for them but I would recommend a hardback, not the paperback.
