Press Start is a great book to capture the attention of beginner readers that love video games. The story is easy to follow and there are game references peppered throughout that every little kid will recognize and love. In later books, there are a few in-jokes for those of us that grew up on video games ourselves. Particularly nice is the fact that the book avoids the standard potty humor plot devices that seemingly every 'new' beginner reader book want to use nowadays. My oldest son, a 1st grader, finished the 70+ pages and immediately wanted to start reading book 2. His little brother loved listening to the story also!
Sadly, despite all of the negative reviews associated with the binding, it seems that the producer has yet to fix the issue. The binding pulled apart on the first reading. I cringe to think of what it will look like once my kids get through it several times. If it wasn't for that quibble, this book would get 5 stars.

Review
"The fast, repetitive plot uses basic, simple sentences and child-friendly objects of interest, such as lakes of lava, for children working on reading independence, while the nerdy in-jokes benefit adults reading with a child. A strong series start." -- Kirkus

It's always game on with Super Rabbit Boy.
From the Inside Flap
Animal Town is in trouble! Meanie King Viking and his dreaded robot army are spreading No Fun across the land. Only Super Rabbit Boy can save the day! But first he must get through many dangers, including sand traps, lava, and lots and lots of robots. Will Super Rabbit Boy make it to the final level, or will it be game over?
--This text refers to the library edition.
From School Library Journal
Gr 1–3—A young boy playing a handheld video game as the character Super Rabbit Boy works his way through many colorful pages of peril, navigating a sea of Robo-Crabs, biting Robo-Fish, quicksand, Robo-Snakes, and the very scary Mount Boom and trying to save Singing Dog and all of Animal Town from King Viking and his robot army. The point of view quickly shifts from a third-person perspective of the boy in his messy bedroom to a first-person perspective as the boy plays his game, then flashes between these two viewpoints throughout. Brightly colored illustrations of the game screen move the story along rather quickly. With short chapters and full-color pages, this first installment in a new series will draw in young independent readers. VERDICT A strong addition to most chapter book collections, especially where there are gamers.—Lindsay Persohn, University of South Florida, Tampa

Good story, but poor construction. Update, Amazon sent a new one and all it good.
Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2017Verified Purchase
The story is great. My son loves it. However, the book is poorly constructed. I literally fell apart in my hands the first time we read the story. This was within less than 24 hours of owing it. This wasn't even a child abusing it. This was me reading the book to my son in bed the first night we owned it. Something is wrong with this batch of books.
Update: Amazon sent us a new book. This book has a slightly different cover (not as slick) and it holding up as it should. Thanks.

My son enjoyed one of the side stories, so I decided to start the series with him. The story is what it is, he enjoys it and it encourages him to read.
Unfortunately, from the moment we opened the book, pages were falling out. At first, I taped them back together. More started falling out as we read. It appears as though the binding wasn't properly glued, or however they keep it together.
It is frustrating to purchase a new book and have it fall apart immediately. I'd personally go to a brick-and-mortar to check the quality of the binding before purchasing the next in the series.

I’m writing this review because I was hesitant to buy the book because of the reviews stating the binding is terrible. I went ahead and bought it anyway and the binding in the book I received is fine, we had no problems. Also, my 7 year old, first grade, video game playing, super hero loving boy ADORES this book! It is the first chapter book he has read and he sat down and read it out loud in one sitting(took him about an hour) and his five year old brothers sat and listened to him the whole time too. After he was done reading it he started the book all over again, that is how much he loved it. It is the perfect transition to chapter books, a nice length, great pictures, with a theme that my little gamer loved. I truly believe that if someone says they don’t like reading they just haven’t found the right book yet and I think this book really turned that page for my son. I already ordered the second one for him. Highly recommend.

I think this is a fantastic book.
There are several reasons for my reaction.
I love the format. It's a nice blend of a story book and a graphic novel.
The speech bubbles really help show who is talking in the book.
This story shows the character failing time and again. But they keep trying again until they win.
That's great for my son who hates making mistakes.
I don't see any issues with the bindings yet.
This book is worth a viewing.

My 7 year old son loves this series. He seems to be a picky reader- likes to read but the book really has to be super interesting to him. He loves Minecraft and playing video games so I thought this series might catch his interest and it sure did!! It seems to be the right level for him as a 1st grader, but he did read the book in just a few hours, so maybe just a little too easy. He loved the book so much we ended up ordering the whole series and now he’s already rereading them! I definitely recommend this as a high interest book for beginner readers- especially if they are into video games

I got this for my six-year-old son whose favorite series in the Magic Treehouse. He reads this book very quickly, then read it a couple more times over the last month. He really likes the pictures and the story. He even shared the different scenes with me that he liked the best and wanted to talk about it. Overall, I'm really glad we got this book.

Would your young reader rather play video games than read? If so: this is the book you - and they - are looking for!
Having run libraries in both the UK and US, SUPER RABBIT BOY is truly a kid-pleaser. With a video game-driven storyline, full-color illustrations, and appropriately spaced text (in both traditional narrative writing and speech bubbles), this book never sat on our library shelves for more than a day. Numerous copies have been purchased and given as gifts as well. This series brings kids the enjoyment of reading a "chapter book" and hooks them into an appealing series to boot. Highly recommended for emerging readers ages 5+.

Good Book - TERRIBLE binding
Reviewed in Canada on May 9, 2017Verified Purchase
We bought a copy of this book through my son's school for a book fair.
The story is great and he really enjoys reading it.
The problem is not with the book/story, it's with the binding.
Within a couple of hours of bringing this book home, it fell apart at the seems. Literally. The binding looks like it was done with Post-It glue, because the pages just fell out of the book.
We chalked this up to bad luck and bough another copy off of Amazon. No luck!
The same exact thing happened with the second copy. With VERY light handling, the pages all just fall out of the book.
My son really loves reading this book and it's incredibly upsetting that no thought or care was put into the quality of the prints.
I hope this is corrected on subsequent printings of this book.
I want to give this story 4 or 5 stars simply because of how much my son loves it, but I have to drop the rating down (this is unfair to the author, I realize, but it needs to be addressed) because of the unacceptable binding.

Fall apart immedediately
Reviewed in Canada on August 24, 2018Verified Purchase
My 5 year old loves these books but I have purchased a few and each one has fallen apart at the seams the first time we read it. I kept buying them because of the storylines but won’t again and seriously dissuade anyone from doing so. They are terribly, cheaply made and it’s upsetting for the little ones when they break immediately. They are, literally, being held together now by tape. A waste of money.

Pages fall out easily
Reviewed in Canada on September 18, 2019Verified Purchase
I bought these books for the grade 2's in my classroom. They were VERY excited to read this series of books and suggested I purchase them.
I opened the books today during silent reading and low and behold after 2 minutes a couple of pages in "Press Start #1" come out. The boys who have this book at home mentioned it also happened to them. I now have a group of upset 7 year olds and the authors website isn't up and running to let him know of our frustration!

My 7 year old loves these

Perfect reading level for my 7 year old to read these independently and he loves them. Has torn through several in the series and read again and again. Right up his alley with the video game context to the stories.
