In that respect, Waggoner did a great job. I could easily hear Jensen and Jared delivering the dialogue of this book, and the general behavior of the guys felt true to the original material. Sam struck me as more book smart than what I'm used to, but not enough to throw him out of character. References to *canon* background were kept fairly minimal, so there wasn't much opportunity for error that would upset the diehard fans, either.
The only thing I disliked about the story was that scenes jumped back and forth between the brothers and the antagonists. Because of that, we always knew what the bad guys were up to before Sam and Dean could find out for themselves. Since it's a given that neither Sam or Dean would be permanently killed off in the story, this dampened a lot of the suspense. The reader, almost always, will know who's going to attack the guys and when. I'd have preferred that we learn the motives of the villains and watch the events unfold alongside the Winchesters, rather than apart from them.
Oh - and while I saw that some readers didn't care for the side story that involved a flashback into the brothers' past, I thought it was one of the most interesting parts of the book. The flashbacks (which take place when Dean is in his early teens) are heavy, but I found them to be more exciting than the main story.
So, bottom line: If you're a Supernatural fan and are interested in stepping into the world of the Winchesters outside of the TV show, this is a good place to start. If you're NOT a fan of the show, I'm not sure that this book will endear you to the characters enough to win you over, but you'll definitely be able to follow along and enjoy the ride.
Well written, fast paced, from an author who clearly knows his characters and their stories. A definite must read for any Supernatural fan :)
I hope Mr. Waggoner writes more Supernatural novels so we can keep enjoying the show long after the boys jump the shark... which in my opinion happened two seasons ago!
I will be honest at first I thought a villain from the series Doc Benton would have a part in this story especially when Conrad showed up I half expected him to have some sort of connection to Doc Benton especially given his profession, status, and Frankenstein motif. I figured Conrad would at some point mention Doc Benton was a former student or colleague.
Still over all I found it to be a good read I felt the resolution to the flashback sub plot to be a bit odd I mean Sam and Dean taking this long to get a ghost that killed a friend of theirs? Never mind the idea that John Winchester would let something that nearly killed his boys go. Still aside from the little issues I have I feel the characters were true to the series it felt like I was reading an actual episode to the show.
I give this book a thumbs up and highly recommend it to any fellow Supernatural Fan.

it was like watching an episode!! the author caught the mannerisms of the characters spoton.
it really was true to the show. He also did a good job of reminding readers of what happened in the show which was good cos i forgot tbh!! a talented author.
