Superpowered (Click Your Poison) Paperback – April 27, 2015
Enhance your purchase
3 Unique Storylines. Over 50 Possible Endings. Just one question... Will YOU Be a Hero or a Villain?
You know the superhero fantasy. What would life be like if you had superhuman abilities? But really, given the choice, would you save the world or conquer it? In SUPERPOWERED, the choice is yours.
After a bizarre experiment leaves you with one of three superpowers (play the book multiple times to explore all three!), you must ally with or confront the other two test subjects while the fate of Mercury City--nay, the world!--hangs in the balance.
Here's how it works: You, Dear Reader, are the main character of this story. Save the world or conquer it, the choice is your. "There's someone up there! He's going to jump!" Thirteen stories up, black smoke billows out and curls up the sides of the building:
- There may be a crowd, but I'm the only one who can save him! Go to page 351
- Gross. I don't want to be around to see that. Go to page 244
Fans of Marvel's Avengers or DC's Justice League can now live their own comic book adventure (even if you're more of a Deadpool or Joker type). Like the gamebooks popular in the 1980s-90s (Choose Your Own Adventure, Give Yourself Goosebumps, etc)*, this is a series where you choose how to progress through the book. Unlike any others, this is the first series designed specifically for adults.

So this was a fun throwback to that time. And with superpowers! (As you can probably tell by the name of the book.) I remember keeping my finger at the last choice in case I made the wrong one (and in this way checking out all the storylines) - but being an ebook, this one does it for you! You can just go back to the last choice if you die - or there's a handy index at the back that allows you to click directly to any section - if you remember the name.
This was a lot of fun. I don't know how much of my enjoyment was based on nostalgia, but either way I really liked it.
Was surprised to immediately discover moderate profanity, discussion of pimps and whores in the neighborhood. Adult language and themes (Amazon would refuse my review if I posted the words used here, but some included sexual references)
First adventure ended with car crushing me into “hero sauce”.
With all the super hero movies/animations spilling out, I was definitely excited when this book was announced! I bought it at the special discounted price and cannot be any more happier when it finally downloaded to my kindle!
I was determined to be a super hero. But on my first attempt, I was completely bested by the villain and died and unfortunate death. So, I went back and decided to choose a different superpower and go into hiding instead. Yet again, I died. Multiple times. But I did find a nice Easter egg that the author hid for all the Click Your Poison fans! I can't wait to find the other one(s)! It seems I keep dying whenever I read the Click Your Poison series. But that's just part of the fun with these books! I finally was able to defeat the villain but I want answers. I do hope I will be able to find the answers to my questions (like who is this Experi-mentor).
I'm still going through more scenarios but maybe next time I'll be a super villain. Just to see how I fare as a villain instead of a hero.
Superpowered is fun, hilarious, and comes with a great cast of supporting characters, which is to be expected from any and all of Schannep's Click Your Poison books. I highly recommend ALL of Schannep's books. They're great and give a nostalgic feel for those of us who loved game books as kids, while adding something new to the genre.

THIS REVIEW WILL CONTAIN NO SPOILERS SORRY FOLKS!
This was a book I'd been wanting to read for some time, and wow it reads like something out of the MCU (Maybe there should buy the rights for phase 4). The way you get to choose how the story pans out from the choices you make isn't anything new, gamebooks are amazing and have been around for ages. What sets this book apart however is the humour and adult undertones he weaves throughout the book, not to mention turning a lot of cliches on their head. I think he says on the cover there are three different storylines with three separate endings but I think I counted four of each, not to mention the 50 odd paragraphs of intriguing, multi-layered storytelling that can only come when a master of the craft and genre gets to strut his stuff.
I have definitely become a fan of this author and look forward to the rest of the series.
My only qualm with this book, was being a super-hero themed book I was waiting for the elusive post-credit scene but it never came lol
After you get offered the chance to join a experiment to tap into the potential of humans, you find yourself possessed of one of three different superpowers and the choice of what you do with them - will you elect to become a champion of good or strive to control and conquer as a vile villain? Having three superpowers and a choice of heroism vs villainy means each storyline further branches in two, but I was impressed how much you can do (or fail) within each of those six possible core paths- there’s a best ending for each power/alliance but plenty of other ways for victory or defeat too.
What especially works with Superpowered is its use of characters that can show up in any direction - you’re actually not alone in gaining powers and I liked how your two counterparts have not only inherit the abilities you might have gained in other situations but can equally become heroes or villains in their own right, allying or opposing you! Other characters like the mad scientist behind your transformation, a shady G-Man and an aspiring reporter can be in different opinions of you, meaning the story doesn’t have a specific antagonist and allows for greater variety, perfect in interactive adventure games. There’s even a funny use of collated connections between other books, like having the G-Man being a former partner of FBI Agents in Murdered, or a chance to discover a dark connection between your powers and a Zombie infestation within another universe that takes place in both Infected and Pathogens!
In all as both a superhero fan (lots of bemusing references to various comic characters) and as an aspiring Interactive Fiction writer this is a great example of how to create a modern story for adults who might have grown up with Choose Your Own Adventure or Fighting Fantasy books and want something with plenty of depth! I definitely intend to get the other five books in the series (including an upcoming book with Spies and Secret Agents) and see if the writer tackles other genres like Zombies and Pirates as well.
You are the main character, starting by choosing your superpowers. And then if you are going to be the Heroic Hero or the Villainous Villain.
It is well written and really enjoyable, a couple of times I found myself wanting to choose an option that wasn't there, but there is no possible way that there could have been a choice that makes everyone happy.
The only reason it lost a star was that it could have done with more choices to prolong the experiences.
