In this follow-up film to SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL SHERIFF!, James Garner portrays a con artist who runs off with bride-to-be Marie Windsor to the small Western town of Purgatory where the good citizens mistake him for famous gunslinger Chuck Connors. Garner is actually delighted with the mistake and decides to take the town for everything he can get! Also on hand is Garner's sidekick, dim-witted Jack Elam, and a love interest, tomboyish Suzanne Pleshette, whose ambition is to start a ladies finishing school. But when genuine-gunslinger Connors arrives in town and challenges Garner, Garner remarks, "I'm slow...but you're slower." We will never know...Connors shoots himself in the foot. So it's a fine movie. Standard western of the day. Goofy fun. But Support Your Local Gunfighter is pretty much the same plot as Support Your Local Sheriff (1969). I loved the local sheriff movie. This 1971 version is just a clone. Different people except for the same James Garner, but the same plot. Too weird. At first I thought there was a mix up in titles. If I hadn't seen the Sheriff version, would I like this one? Probably. It is pretty much the same movie. But cloning turned me off. Watch Support Your Local Sheriff and pass on this one.

If you want a good laugh, James Garner and Jack Elam are really enjoyable in this classic comedy western spoof. Swifty Morgan, [a ruthless gunman killer] who is played by Chuck Connors. But, In this story, Swifty's identity is stolen by Elam at the urging of a lying fast talker, James Garner who is trying to outfox the town's crooked boss. for a woman [Pleshette] with great results. This story is delightful and funny, like "Support Your Local Sheriff". Another Garner/Elam Classic

Once was not enough

It's basically the same movie as "Support Your Local Sheriff" with a few twists. As you can tell by the name there's not any real effort to hide that fact and since it's all in good fun, who cares! It's own right. I don't think it's quite as good "....Sheriff" but it's close. Same basic crew but with several new faces and a scenario that's different enough to make it fresh and plenty entertaining. And the best thing about it for me was that "...Sheriff and "...Gunfighter" together represented a second career for the great character actor Jack Elam. He always did his job.

Absolutely charming

You don't have to like westerns to love this witty, witty movie. Perfect plot & dialogue, the best collection of American character actors you'll ever see in one cast, a young James Garner at his most charming, Susan Pleshette as his tomboy love interest and more fun than you can shake a dynamite-laden mule at. Don't miss companion piece "Support Your Local Sheriff" either!

Great Family Flick

One of our all times favorite, modern comedic westerns. Truly impressive vintage cast full of complimentary talents and a very funny story overall. Ideal family night flick for all ages, very little actual violence and lots of wry cowboy humor.

Great picture and fun commentary on the Blu-ray

This is a fun and goofy comedy Western made all the more enjoyable by Michael Schlesinger's colorful commentary. You'll learn about the character actors and what else you've seen them in, the cinematography, set design and much more. The quality of the picture is excellent in the Blu-ray release.

From "The Great Escape" to his superior work as Rockford on TV

James Garner is a screen presence one must marvel at, especially if he is allowed to employ his somewhat ego centric adolescent personality. I have marveled at his ability nearly everywhere I have watched his work. From "The Great Escape" to his superior work as Rockford on TV, there is little to discredit in his ability to inhabit ones mind and heart. He reflects these attributes in this film as well. "Support Your local Sherrif was slightly better, but both are truly enjoyable.

This movie is very funny. I laughed so hard. It's a comedy-western. At the end of movie, I recognized an actor who played Swifty Morgan but I forgot his name. He's Chuck Connors according to Wikipedia. I remember about him little bit. Swifty looked very serious. LOL!
