The Surprising Purpose of Anger: Beyond Anger Management: Finding the Gift (Nonviolent Communication Guides) Paperback – April 1, 2005
Enhance your purchase
You have an alternative. By practicing the Nonviolent Communication (NVC) process you can use that anger to serve a specific, life-enriching purpose. It tells you that you're disconnected from what you value and that your needs are not being met. Rather than managing your anger by suppressing your feelings or blasting someone with your judgments, Marshall Rosenberg shows you how to use anger to discover what you need, and then how to meet your needs in constructive ways.
This booklet will help you apply these four key truths:
- People or events may spark your anger but your own judgments are its cause
- Judging others as "wrong" prevents you from connecting with your unmet needs
- Getting clear about your needs helps you identify solutions satisfying to everyone
- Creating strategies focused on meeting your needs transforms anger into positive actions

The book is much shorter than I thought it would be (more like a booklet), but packs a (nonviolent) punch! The author Marshall Rosenberg has worked with those in our society who've had the worst anger issues--those who've been incarcerated, and he shares relevant personal stories. Stories of those who've used his technique to change themselves and in doing so, change the world. Really!
Rosenberg outlines his incredibly useful technique for accepting anger, and the need behind it. He shows what our anger is covering up--a need which needs to be heard. And he shows how to do it.
Personally I think everyone should read "The Surprising Purpose of Anger." I told my therapist about it and she bought a copy too.
Now, as far as how to transmute the anger, that's what I was hoping a real book would go into exploring. As far as I know, that book has not yet been written.
Realizing that there is a need - for things to be different - that is not being addressed.
And finally, you can state that need.
I highly recommend reading this. :)

It's a very short book compiled from various things Marshall Rosenberg said or wrote at various times. For what it is I think it's vastly overpriced. It seemed more like a way of selling more books than a genuine attempt to help people to process and make sense of their anger.
