I love this author.
Since I discovered him I've grabbed all his books, and enjoyed them all.
But this? This is his best ever!
Constant twists, unreliable (?) narrator.
Different POV's.
All cinematic, and exciting.
My only sadness is it'll be another year before I get to read a new book.
Riley Sager, you are my King!

1.0 out of 5 starsSilly, derivative, predictable
Reviewed in the United States on July 3, 2021
I can't believe I spent $14.99 for this drivel. The plot was so predictable and the main character so unbelievable. So many opportunities to escape yet continued to stay captive. Much of the plot had sequences used by other authors- nothing original. The final plot twist was absurd and unbelievable. I have read all of the books by this author and they were excellent. This book generated no suspense and was an incredibly fast read because it was so poorly written . Save your money or prepare to be extremely disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars READ. THIS. NOW!

I knew I would like this book. The first time I read Riley Sager I was hooked and had to immediately read all available novels. So when this book came out I knew I would like it, I hoped I would love it. But. Good lord it’s so much better than that. It surpassed all my hopes and wants and expectations and exploded through to the level beyond brilliance.

This book is genius. Screen play. Novel. Cinematic. What in the world did I just read and see and take part of! This is the type of book that gripped me from the beginning aaaaall the way through to the last page where I felt I could finally release the breath I was holding. I literally threw the book down at moments thinking WHAT IN THE ACTUAL F. and then scurried back to pick it up and continued to be dazzled.

You come to parts where you’re like AHA this is it! Wait.. but why is there so much book left… wait what… WHAT!

I won’t speak about the plot, the blurb is plenty and going into this as blindly as can be is part of the experience and fun.

This has to be his best to date in my opinion. A. Must. Read!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A compulsively readable thriller !!

Ladies and gentlemen, Riley’s done it again.

I’m pretty sure all of you know that I’m a Riley Sager superfan so this book has been on my radar since it was first announced.

I immediately preordered it from Amazon and couldn’t wait to buddy read it with my Overbooked book club.

First of all, Sager’s writing just pulls you right in. With all of his novels I was immediately captivated by page 1. This was no exception at all. The synopsis intrigued me, but once I got into the first couple of chapters-I couldn’t put it down.

The characters mysterious. I wanted to shake Charlie (the main character) and yell “Girl, GTFO and RUN!” As for the others, you know they’re all playing a part- you just don’t know what it is… YET!

Now on to the plot- as in all Sager books expect a MAJOR plot twist. So again, you know it’s coming and everything ‘clicks’ and you’re left thinking ‘HOW DID I MISS THAT!?’ But then within the last couple of pages everything falls into place and explained. Now it makes much more sense than what your original theory was all along.

With this one I felt like I was back in the 80s, watching a Jason Voorhees movie in the woods and waiting for the ax wheeling killer to pop right out!!

Lock Every Door is still my favorite Riley Sager book, but Survive the Night is a great and awesome read.

5.0 out of 5 stars twists and turns until the very end!

When Charlie's world is turned upside down by her best friend's murder, she decides to leave her idyllic Olyphant university, possibly for good. But it's the early 90's, and the best way to get a ride across the country in the middle of the semester is the "rides board" on campus, which means riding with a stranger. Enter Josh. Josh is a stranger. Maybe a student? Maybe an employee of the university? All Charlie knows is he can help her run far from the mistakes she thinks she made, her guilt, and the death that surrounds her at school.

But is Josh who he says he is? Or is he the Campus Killer, trying to make Charlie his next victim?

I LOVED this book, from start to finish! Perfect cat-and-mouse thriller, complete with "can I trust my own brain?" and a love of old movies. Charlie has experienced quite a bit of trauma in her life, with her best friend/roommate's murder not the first death she's had to deal with. To cope, her brain plays movies in her head whenever life feels to stressful, so Charlie spends much of the novel trying to figure out if what she's seeing and experiencing is even real.

A main narrator who can't trust herself? A few switches in point of view to learn what other characters are thinking and doing? Twists and turns to the very last sentence? This was a perfect summer read, and I would recommend it to anyone who loves suspense, thriller, serial killer stories, nostalgia for the 90's, and just plain good reading!

S Y N O P S I S // November 1991.... Charlie Jordan finds herself alone in a car with someone who could be a serial killer... The “Campus Killer” is still at large anyway. Josh Baxter and Charlie meet at the campus ride board, each needing to leave town for different reasons. But as the drive moves further along the dark and twisted highway Charlie begins to find holes in Josh’s story and begins to wonder if he really is the “Campus Killer”. During this cat and mouse game, with no where to go, will Charlie make it out alive?!

R E V I E W // After waiting what felt like forever for another Riley Sager book I finally received my book on its pub day and I was not disappointed!!! I love the 90s vibe and all of the movie references!! This was one wild ride, pun definitely intended. Charlie is such an unreliable character that it made you constantly question who exactly was the “Campus Killer” in this novel. While I was able to make a correct guess as to who was actually the serial killer the twists and turns that got me to the ending left me questioning myself the entire time. This was such an amazing read that I read it in a day! Riley Sager is a true mastermind when it comes to thrillers! If you haven’t picked this one up yet I highly suggest you do, you will not regret it!

Once it gets going, it is unputdownable.

As a bit of a movie freak myself who had dealt with a condition similar to hers, I really related to Charlie. And the story took place very close to where I used to live, so the locale felt true and perfect to the story.

And the twists.... That is all I'm saying, because if you love a good thriller, you will enjoy this, and I'm not spoiling it for you.

This is the first Riley Sager novel I have read. It won't be the last.

I am a huge Riley Sager fan & I haven't met a book of his I didn't love! Is it deep writing? No. Is it entertaining & addicting as hell? YES! What a truly nostalgic & crazy ride this book was! It was just such an entertaining story & adventure! There were quite a few twists & just when I thought I had it figured out, Sager took us on a detour that I didn't see coming. I loved it! I love Sager's writing style & while it's true that his female leads sometimes leave a lot to be desired (how could Charlie truly be so utterly stupid throughout the entire book?!), I still enjoy his books. I really wish one or all would be made into a movie or show!

I’m already a Riley Sager fan, and I thought this was his best yet. It is a compulsively readable thriller that takes the rider on a trip full of twists and turns at a breakneck pace. I loved the cinematic quality of the writing and the many homages paid to the film greats. My favorite part was the creative and satisfying ending. Recommended for any thriller reader, especially if you love movies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sager did it again!

I'll be honest, I was worried about this one. I was afraid that I would lose interest if the entire book took place in a car along a Pennsylvania highway at night. But Sager worked his usual magic and kept my interest - and there are plenty of scenes outside the car to keep the reader hooked.⁣⁣⠀
⁣⁣⠀
I found Charlie's love for movies to be so interesting, and how Sager worked that into the gaslighting storyline was genius. I think this is partly why I didn't mind most of the book taking place in the car. I'm guilty of daydreaming sometimes, but Charlie's obsession is next-level. ⁣⁣⠀
⁣⁣⠀
I think I changed my feelings towards every character throughout the book at least once - no one is who they seem and I loved that!⁣⁣⠀
⁣⁣⠀
As someone who grew up in Pennsylvania in the 1990s, I really loved the setting. I've driven I-80, visited the Pocconos, listen to all the grunge music, and watched all the movies. I lived in washed-out jeans with an oversized Gap sweatshirt and Keds shoes so it was a fun flashback for me.⁣⁣⠀
⁣⁣⠀
My only gripe is that I figured out who the killer was. With there only being four characters in the entire book, I was able to figure it out by process of elimination. ⁣⁣⠀
⁣⁣⠀
I really loved the wrap-up at the end. Bravo!⁣⁣⠀

If you're a fan of Riley Sager you will love this book. If you're not, read it, and you will be. My favorite of Sager's novels is Lock Every Door, but this one is a close second. It keeps you on the edge if your seat, and made my stomach churn with unease (in a good way) the whole way through. Don't hesitate, just read this, I don't think you'll regret it.
