I Survived the Joplin Tornado, 2011 (I Survived #12) Kindle Edition
|New from||Used from|
Dex certainly knows how deadly tornadoes can be, but this one isn't heading toward Joplin, and wouldn't it be great to have a brave and exciting story of his own to tell Jeremy when he comes home? But when the tornado shifts direction, Dexter's bravery is about to get seriously tested...

Informative and breathlessly paced." -- Kirkus ReviewsPraise for I Survived The Attacks of September 11, 2001:"[Tarshis] crafts a dramatic, emotionally intense tale that takes account of 9/11's physical and emotional costs -- short- and long-term -- while ending on an upward beat." -- Kirkus ReviewsPraise for I Survived The Sinking of the Titanic, 1912:"The fast pace and intrinsically fascinating disaster story will keep readers turning the pages." -- Kirkus ReviewsPraise for I Survived Hurricane Katrina, 2005:"Expressive illustrations capture the drama of the storm and its aftermath, but the book's real power comes from its exploration of what it means to be a hero." -- Booklist --This text refers to the paperback edition.

The date was Sunday, May 22nd, 2011. Dexter James, 11, was in an SUV. Why? The writing is very descriptive:
"..pain was like being stung by thousands of scorpions."
"..wind whipped round him like invisible tentacles."
Is there any escape? Before we find out, the reader is taken back in time to the day before. Dexter is thinking of his brother when he just misses a near collision with a storm chaser. Dr. Gage is in town to chase and document the storm system that is forming out west of Missouri. He talks back to the Super Outbreak of 1974.
Although this book was interesting and our 8 year old loves it, it is necessary to remember that this particular story is FICTION! Is it well written? For the most part, yes but Chapter 15 is very disjointed. It talks about searching through debris and then getting out of bed. This is followed by someone back home and then in the hospital. The author does share at the end the reason for writing the book, along with the actual timeline of the storm, as well as answering questions on tornadoes and how to stay safe if found in that situation. We were actually on the road at the time the tornado hit, returning from Branson. The rain was torrential.
I downloaded this book for my Kindle. I was not required to write a review but chose to do so. Thanks, Liz
I enjoyed the book because I like it how the Main character narrates the whole disaster and his way of Explaining the tornado.
After I read this book I felt sad for the city of Joplin And what people went through and how every town has to go through after a tornado.
Appropriate content for 2nd graders, too if their reading level is there. We have had a lot of luck with the "I Survived" chapter books during the 3rd grade year. It's a solid go-to series to knock out those book reports.

It was good fun reading it. Dr Gage would be a nice friend in real life.
I want everyone to read this series. Thank you! Lauren Tarshis, you’re one of my favourite authors.
