A Family-Focused, Faith-Based "A Star Is Born"
Verified purchase
As pop stars continue to be built from younger and less world-weary materials, director-screenwriter Craig McMahon’s “Sweet Sunshine” expertly distills the convergence of fame and coming-of-age confusion that we increasingly understand to be a true alligator to wrestle for those few that manage to make that ascent.

Young country singer T.J. Millhouse (John Way) is just old enough to be learning in real-time that a skyward trajectory can incur costs. His success stirs in him questions of faith and family. He’s ascending, but so is his learning curve, and it all becomes fraught with risk when tragedy arrives. A young woman by the name of Sunshine (Savannah McMahon) emerges from the pain, and helps TJ piece himself back into a more fully realized whole.

“Sweet Sunshine” is earnest family fare running on the battery of faith-based storytelling, and doing it at an elite level. The production values are strong, from terrific stage performances that defy indie convention, to a soundtrack loaded with expertly placed original songs that serve their intentions well. “Sweet Sunshine” is a sweetly-told, big screen reflection of our contemporary pop stars, their meteoric rises, and the first-time feelings and situations that can follow close behind. - (Was this review of use to you? Love that Country Music
Verified purchase
What an awesome indie, with excellent refreshing country music! You follow an honest kid with talent, who has to overcome various tragedies to make it in the country music business, and may find it in something or someone unexpected. The overall production value is impressive for an indie, with some pretty cool locations. The story is a bit familiar, but with its likeable characters and onset chemistry between the protagonists, supported by a kickass soundtrack, you come out feeling good in an authentic way. I thought it was still more real than A Star is Born. With all the movies out there, I still felt like this was the first time I saw a movie just like Sweet Sunshine.

Heartwarming Family Film

"A Star is Born" was a big hit, and "Sweet Sunshine" is akin to a faith-based family film version of that mega-hit. It's a very heartwarming story, but one filled with struggle that must be overcome. Faith-based films can be corny, but this one is not. Great cast and production!

A Sweet Story
Verified purchase
Sweet Sunshine will probably remind people a bit of A Star Is Born and I definitely mean that as a compliment. A Star Is Born was one of my favorite films of the past few years. Both films feature stories about musicians, romance, and the ups and downs within the industry. Sweet Sunshine offers more of a heartwarming plot and a dose of spirituality, which are probably very appealing to so many us these days. If you're looking for something sweet that you can watch with your family, then check out Sweet Sunshine.

What a Soundtrack!

It's hard to believe this is an indie film--so many great elements from the music/sound to the photography to the actors. Enjoyed the flow of the story and the characters, and I can honestly say I didn't know how it was going to end. I won't give away any spoilers so you can enjoy it on your own.

Escapist Rock Star Movie

Sweet Sunshine tells the story of a young man with a talent for writing songs, who suffers terribly with his family and life. But, well, the road to being famous is never easy.

Sometimes you need one of those uplifting movies among all the dark ones out there. I'm not even into country music, and I was able to be transported into the world of concerts and stardom. Reminds me of a Walk Whitman quote: "Keep your face always toward the sunshine - and shadows will fall behind you."

Feel good movie with great music

On the surface this movie is a simple story of rags to riches cloaked in urban country music, but the movie is much more than that. It has Oscar winning quality music and lyrics on par with Frozen and other current movies with a lot of music. The lead character is charming and engaging as we follow him on the ups and downs of life. The songs and concert performances solid and help tell with the story. In the end it is a feel good movie.
