The zippers, cabled handle, and materials of this backpack have been stretched, stressed, tossed, man-handled, crammed and beaten in trams from Budapest to Bratislava ... buses from Vienna to Krakow to Geneva ... subways from D.C. to the Chicago El to Beijing .... trains from Lake Balaton, Hungary to Bern, Switzerland.
The top "small" pouch hold three glasses cases (regular, reading, and sun) ....plus room for a mini LED flashlight and whatever boarding passes you might need. The front "smallish" pouch holds every electronic cord I'll need while travelling, my external hard drives, plug adapters, etc. The next pouch holds every travel guide and book I want to travel and the large pouch holds a brick sized voltage converter and a third of the clothes I'll need.
This is one of the best "luggage" purchases I've ever made.
People that fill their backpacks to the extreme would benefit from a backpack like this. This is perfect for traveling and your day to day loads of books for high school/college students. The middle pocket is perfect for putting small objects that you need quick access to like passports, wallets, electronic devices and etc. This is great for highly organized people! There are many different compartments, which it gives several options of storage. You can use this backpack for nearly anything.
The shock absorbing straps provide comfort even while carrying heavy loads with this backpack. The air flow back padding definitely helps you get through the hot days. If you get tired of carrying your backpack while traveling, there is a second handle for keeping your backpack close to a small suitcase. That is very convenient when you been waiting in line too long or running in the airport to catch a plane.
I had my first Ibex Swiss Gear backpack for nearly four years, I bought the new one on January 28th, 2017). I have noticed a few differences from the older version. I attached pictures comparing my new backpack (Right) vs the old one (Left). Although the appearance on the outside is the same overall, there are a few differences within the backpacks. The front pocket has a different layout inside. I personally preferred the old layout better because it had a few more divisions. The middle, small pocket is bigger in the new Ibex which is great because it provides a pocket that you can have quick access to.
Durability: This is by far the most durable backpack I ever had. The main reason I bought a new backpack was because the straps of the old one were tearing up. I find that reasonable accounting the load sizes that I put in it along the four years I had my first Ibex. As you can see in the pictures below the new Ibex seem to have thicker straps. So I expect the new Ibex to last a lot longer. The padding for the computer is very thick and it keeps it from going all over the place.
Conclusion: This backpack is definitely worth the price. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a durable, comfortable and spacious backpack. You might find that the shoulder straps will start to wear out, assuming you use the backpack everyday with heavy loads.
These are fantastic backpacks and solid state. Protects your laptop and everything else therein. Many different enclosures for whatever you need, and also nice additions like protection and cable mgt for phone/audio devices and the like.
I have typically used these with 17"+ Gaming laptops and it's awesome, but would work equally well for smaller machines.
Provides great protection as I have dropped mine on more than one occasion packed with electronics and no issues whatsoever.
NOTES ON THIS NEW MODEL. Couple of things I don't like about the current version but I can live with:
1. My original one had an actual plastic clip lock that held my laptops super securely in the padded section but they have dumped that for velcro. With the old version you could throw the thing down some stairs with the laptop pouch unzipped and not have to worry about it flying out. I suspect this new design may not perform as well (thankfully you generally aren't letting it tumble like that but honestly did happen to me once on an escalator while traveling).
2. The internal lining is now some sort of nylon material that is really noisy. Like crunchy noisy. If you dig in there in a quiet place People might 'shhhh!' you like you are opening a big bag of chips or candy wrapper. Again, not a huge deal, but that is a very real use case where you need to retrieve something during a meeting/talk/whatever and you don't want to draw attention from the subject matter at hand.
3. Does still seem to be the solid state quality of the last one. I will update here if I find otherwise.
Main take away is no matter how much convincing you have to do with your Boss/Wife/Self that it's worth paying so much for a backpack I can tell you for a fact that it is. Again, I abused the crap out of my last one and it gave me an excellent experience over the 10 yrs I had it.
Top international reviews
Great backpack if you are not planning on using it as a schoolbag. (Why else would you use this type of Laptop backpack?)
After one year of normal 'heavy use' for school, the case base platform rubber has perished and split with the fabric underneath tearing along the whole width on one side and early signs on the other. See photos.
Consequently the case is unusable now.
Initially they stated it was due to misuse which I strongly challenged and then they stated that although the warranty is for 3years, the damage related to 'wear and tear' and heavy use is not covered under the warranty. So pointless warranty then. Will look for alternative that can stand up to 'normal' school usage.
I have had mine for three and a half years now and it has been on international flights and domestic flights, sometimes in the baggage hold (with laptop removed ...) and it is only just starting to get a bit bobbly on some of the patches. I suspect that if I used one of those shavers for removing bobbles from jumpers to tidy it up, it would look brand new again. There are no broken zips, fasteners, poppers, straps, clips, buckles or other allied fixtures and fittings, no fraying (other than the aforementioned bobbling), no tears - it is still in really good condition after almost daily use.
I have lugged a 17" mobile workstation around in it before now and currently I use it for a more bijou notebook, 10" tablet, rain coat, lunch bag, and sundry adapters, leads, chargers and headphones. When I have been on business trips, with careful packing and selection of what to leave behind, I have been able to fit in a pair of trousers, a jumper, three shirts, three changes of underclothes, pjs, airport security-friendly toiletries, electric toothbrush, A4 notebook and a notebook computer (no power supply though - I have used a spare at the destination office).
All in all, I am well pleased with it and I'm looking to get more of Wenger's backpacks for relatives who seem to get through a bag every eight or nine months.
I have a Dell Precision 7510, which is a 15.6" laptop and an iPad Pro with its own case. Both of these fit into the rear pocket designed for the laptop without trouble. The Dell comes with a very chunky power supply, which fit into the second pocket from the front nicely; along with a bunch of travel adapters. The very front pocket had plenty of space for pens, business cards, USB sticks and other little knick knacks. There's a zipped pocket so that you can separate these items and keep them safe.
What was missing from my previous case was a place to put the A4 paper catalogues, books and expense reports. The third pocket from the front had enough room for all of this and another divider to separate your paper.
The side zipped pockets I found useful for small USB cables and adapters. The quick access pocket on top is perfect for your passport and wallet. I like the way that it does stand upright by itself and doesn't fall over.
The material feels like it's well made. I'll soon find out how long it lasts up to the rigors of travel.
I have not been displeased with my choice and I don't think you will be either if you pick this bag.
What do I carry in this bag - two 15" laptops with power supplies, a Kindle, noise cancelling headphones, power pack, kensington lock, bag of cables for all eventualities, pens, travel documents and one set of spare (lightweight) clothes when flying ... total weight usually over 10kg. In 6 months I have travelled internationally, using this as hand luggage (don't check the valuable stuff :-O ) and the same number of internal flights - this bag works fantastically.
What is so great? Organisation - with all that stuff I can still find every item easily, there are 4 main compartments, 2 internal zipped compartments , +3 external 'small' compartments and 2 elasticated side pockets. The main laptop section secures two laptops and Kindle and PowerPack - at airport security they slide in and out really, really easily, which makes a big difference in that queue. There is a net pocket here that will hold power supplies and stylus so they are 'to hand' but won't fall out at security.
The array of smaller zipped pockets ensure that I can drop my other valuables into the bag knowing they won't fall out whilst I am pulling the laptops in and out.
There is one 'top' zipped, mid-size pocket that will hold passport, wallet, watch, security pass, shades, small cable, loose change, etc. that is incredibly useful.
Downsides - it is a little heavy, I would not want to weigh this bag at check-in; when I pack all this stuff in it would probably not fit into those 'carry on bag gauges' (but might with a squash) but have never been stopped; there are a couple of zipped pockets so small I have never found a use for them, and the elasticated side pockets are not big enough for Camelback water bottles (my go to hydration packs) but many of the new aluminium, insulated drinks bottles fit perfectly.
After 6mths - I have no serious complaint, nor are there any problems with zips, stitching, or material - simply the usual scuffs of daily use. Would I buy again - Yes - there is no doubt I would buy again, but not expecting to require that bag for many years!
After 12mths of regular office use and four business trips there are no signs of wear, everything works just as day one, the plethora of zipped pockets and slip in pockets continues to amaze me, and organise as many as three laptops plus PSU, cables, mice, USB Power pack, etc. Copes with 15kg+ of bits and pieces.
A really neat feature is a handy zipped pocket on the top for carrying and easily accessing some small items. The bag also seems very well make and appears very study, though I've only had it a few weeks so cannot comment on the long term durability. And finally, the bag is surprisingly light, given it's size (though you'll probably find yourself carrying around a lot of stuff simply because you can).
But the drawback is that, when flying, it is too large to fit under the seat in front of you (at least on Virgin Atlantic economy seats - it could be a different matter with the more expensive wider seats). So either it goes in the overhead locker, or you just put up with it occupying a large chunk of the space where your feet should be.
I carry waterproofs, laptop and charger, pens, glasses case, tablets and all sorts of bits and bobs in comfort with plenty of room left over.
Sits really nicely on the back, and is brilliantly easy to adjust with motorbike gloves on too. I loosen one strap right off to take it off and then put it back on. Then a quick pull on the loose strap tightens it all up nicely.
Excellent product I have no trouble recommending.
I was going to replace like for like as the bag is pretty stylish and well designed with lots of pockets and places to squirrel things away, but reading that other people have also found that the bag isn’t as durable as expected, I’m going to look elsewhere now for its replacement.
If you don’t do a lot of relatively hard travelling, this is a good bag. If you travel a lot the durability is better elsewhere.
However... The 17.3 inch form factor is slightly too long for this 17 inch bag, which means that at the top the corners of the laptop there is virtually no padding over it leaving it vulnerable. I have also now had two zips break after about six months' daily use which means I cannot use it now as the laptop section readily comes completely undone with nothing to stop the computer falling out. One of the clips holding the shoulder straps has also broken.
In conclusion, it is a nice bag for a 17 inch computer but too small for 17.3 inch, and it isn't very well-made.
