1367: Europe stands on the brink of total war.
Political alliances are beginning to rupture, and no state is immune: England, France, the Holy Roman Empire, Milan Genoa, Venice, Constantinople . . . Every mercenary knight must sharpen his sword and prepare for battle.
But Sir William Gold has other problems. Just to reach Europe, he must capture its most unassailable fortress. He must also protect his liege lord, the Green Count, from assassins hell-bent on his death.
The balance of power in the West will change. William Gold must trust in hope, and his men, that he lands on the winning side...

That makes me a little angry...
If you have been waiting for this book for a while (as I was) rest assured that it was worth the wait--but also whets the appetite for more. It seems to have stopped on a half-note, an incomplete part of the adventure--which was a surprise.
The story of William Gold is complex, compelling, and cause to stay up until 2 AM to complete it. But now I am bereft. I don't know very much about the era William Gold lives and fights, but I wager that even those who do may find new illumination and food for thought. The Visconti family is a nest of snakes for certes, and the understory of Gian and his sister is both believable and timeless.
Robert of Geneva continues weaving his poisonous web using the Borc and other malcreants, Hawkwood and Janet reappear, and Nerio is about his own business...
I missed Nerio more than I anticipated. Thankfully Fiore was included----a book w/o Nerio OR Fiore might be readable and enjoyable (I can't imagine a Cameron book that wasn't), but would leave the reader feeling their absense, just as William did...
More backstory appears than the frame of William recounting important events to listeners at the inn...a little off-balance considering the past books...and perhaps evidence that Cameron had written a longer work and decided to break it off earlier than anticipated for reasons of his own.
My only quibble--too short...
The battle scenes are realistic, the wounds are not ignored, and the chivalry is, like any aspirational code of conduct, honored as much in the breach as in the observance.
Cameron is a superb writer, and insofar as the demands of modern publishing will allow, "Sword of Justice" tries to portray what life was like in 14th century Europe. This book spends most of its time in vibrant Renaissance Italy, and Gold's adventures are spiced with political intrigue, treachery, incest and all one would expect from the less-than-Christian rulers of the time.
I can't wait to read volume five ...
The only possible complaint I have is that I'm going to have to be patient and wait however long it takes to write the next book in this series before I get to read it.
The novel is filled with intrigue and terrific battles. The end was a bit abrupt, but there's more to come. Can't wait for the next book!

We begin to see how William Gold navigates the politics of the period, where political alliances are beginning to rupture. No state is immune: England, France, the Holy Roman Empire, Milan, Genoa, Venice, Constantinople . . . Every mercenary knight for hundreds of miles must sharpen his sword and prepare for battle.
There is an authenticity to the writing that only someone like Christian Cameron can bring. Cameron’s own experimental archaeology, teaching armoured fighting, swordsmanship, visiting battlefields and castles, all find their way into his books. For an historical writer this feels very unique and exciting, as it comes across in his writing. You definitely get to experience, as closely as possible, what it must have been like to be a knight, and not necessarily in a chivalrous or romanticised way.
As ever, the plot of the book is extremely exciting, the story is believable and well told. Full of historical references and research that shines through. There are themes that are explored, the nature of chivalry and ethics of violence.
This is a fabulous series and one that just gets better with each book. If you’re intrigued, I urge you to start at book one: The Ill-Made Knight, I cannot recommend this series enough.

The historical details concerning this book has been very well researched by the author, the evidence being a greatly defined glossary and a well-drawn map of Sir William's Travels at the beginning of the book.
While at the end of this book you'll notice a superbly explained Historical Note as well as an Author's Note.
Storytelling is once more of a top-notch quality, because the author keeps you spellbound from start to finish with his tremendous Chivalry story, and because all his characters, mostly real and some fictional, come all vividly to life within this tale.
Once again the book starts with a prologue which is set in Calais in the year AD 1381, and its from there that our main character, the real historical figure Sir William Gold, is narrating his tale of chivalrous adventures.
This book is set between AD 1367-1368, and it is divided into 3 parts, in which Sir William will take us along on his life-journey of chivalry from Outremer in part 1, throughout Italy in part 2, and that will end in and around Milan in part 3, while trying to become the perfect chivalric Knight.
What will follow is another marvellous book of chivalry, where we once more will enter a stage of international politics, where loyalty, betrayal, treason, intrigue and murder are common rules, and where Sir William Gold has to find a way to stay alive in this turmoil and remain true to his chivalric principles.
Very much recommended, for this is historical fiction at its very best, and that's why for me this book tells a tale with: "Words of Steel in a Story of Gold"!

This is the best way to learn history in my opinion and has over many years eradicated my own extremely negative experiences from my history teachers in the past who did their level best to crush my spirit by making the potentially riveting, soul crushingly dull

Same old story for so many great writers who keep going too long (Mantel's 3rd Wolf Hall is a good example!)
Story lines become overcomplex and over discriptive and dialogue reduces to 'he said' ' 'she said' etc, the internal perspective and narrative are also reduced and deminished...
Shame, I really ejoyed the first 2.
