Through a series of incidents two martial artists battle over possession of the Deer Cutting Sword and the affections of a woman but this being a Chor Yuen movie nothing is as it appears with shifting alliances, misunderstandings, and the coolest doll house in the world.
Chor Yuen and Ku Long loved some Shakespeare, misunderstandings, betrayal, awesome sword fights, well maybe not the last bit but this movie takes many queues from Shakespearean tragedy but makes it full of wild colours, clashing swords, and supernatural hijinxs. The crazy doll house does come out of total left field, either it was two partially finished scripts stuck together or somebody had a ready made doll house just kicking around and they went I know how to finish this movie. The plot is full of characters coming and going and sword fighting but for me that is one of things I love about Chor Yuen’s movie is you get plot fit for two movies so there is always something happening. Ti Lung is stoic and heroic as usual but I would have liked more Lily Li She pops up in the beginning and then at the end. She is my favorite sword swinging heroine and always want to see more of her. The Deer Cutting Sword, which makes sense when you hear the explanation, is a weak name. You want your all powerful sword to be Doomsinger, or Mr Chopsall. The Deer Cutting Sword sounds like something you’d buy on an infomercial on a hunting channel at 2 am. Another great Chor Yuen xuxia movie with dazzling colours, amazing sword fights, and a plot that is completely insane.
