Alice in Martial Arts Wonderland

Through a series of incidents two martial artists battle over possession of the Deer Cutting Sword and the affections of a woman but this being a Chor Yuen movie nothing is as it appears with shifting alliances, misunderstandings, and the coolest doll house in the world.

Chor Yuen and Ku Long loved some Shakespeare, misunderstandings, betrayal, awesome sword fights, well maybe not the last bit but this movie takes many queues from Shakespearean tragedy but makes it full of wild colours, clashing swords, and supernatural hijinxs. The crazy doll house does come out of total left field, either it was two partially finished scripts stuck together or somebody had a ready made doll house just kicking around and they went I know how to finish this movie. The plot is full of characters coming and going and sword fighting but for me that is one of things I love about Chor Yuen’s movie is you get plot fit for two movies so there is always something happening. Ti Lung is stoic and heroic as usual but I would have liked more Lily Li She pops up in the beginning and then at the end. She is my favorite sword swinging heroine and always want to see more of her. The Deer Cutting Sword, which makes sense when you hear the explanation, is a weak name. You want your all powerful sword to be Doomsinger, or Mr Chopsall. The Deer Cutting Sword sounds like something you’d buy on an infomercial on a hunting channel at 2 am. Another great Chor Yuen xuxia movie with dazzling colours, amazing sword fights, and a plot that is completely insane.

Good Swordsman Fight Scenes and Acting is Good, But the Story is a Bit Weak
Verified purchase
Movie is in Mandarin with English subtitles if you turn it on. The story is about a special blade that everyone wants to get their hands on because it's the strongest blade made of 9 different metals. The legend is that whoever possesses this blade, the person will be well respected by the martial arts community. Throughout the movie, you will find different members of the fighting kind battle it out. However, one particular young lady who often dress as the "Little Lord" goes around kidnapping or killing using an alias name that frames the ultimate kind-hearted swordsman, Xiao. He is not interested in the special blade, but everyone seems to think he is the culprit that is destroying everyone and they are looking for revenge as some have lost their entire family by his name. He's wondering why this is the case.

Magical Magnificence
Verified purchase
I’ve been looking for this for a long time. The landscaped magical homes, the fog enshrouded river, the glint of light off the blades, one scene filmed at dawn (I wonder how many days that took!) one scene lighting a candle as studio lights around it were turned on. Costuming is interesting. The sets are magnificent, the camera work special, the plot is intricate, multidimensional, with moments of chivalric chemistry.
Though a vagabond, Xiao (Ti Lung’s character) had integrity and honor. When Ti Lung is fighting some of the many groups that attack him, he can be lackadaisical depending on their skill levels. There are some moments of pure fun. They crashed through so many hangings and wall panels, and kicked through one stone wall! When Xiao is fighting the greatest swordsmen he is swift, strong and deadly. I liked that despite being rivals, he and Chen were honorable to each other, and could fight together to defeat their foe.

Excellent Chinese Fantasy Movie from the '70's; Highly Recommended!
Verified purchase
This is an excellent fantasy type movie from the '70's with plenty of action, sword fighting, spear use, and very interesting storyline. This is an extremely complex, and entertaining movie which is a great example of why old Chinese fantasy movies are so fun. Lots of action, intrigue, jealously, sacrifice, mis-direction, and twists.

Pros: First rate story, very good action, and acting.
Cons: As with most Asian movies, it's not going to be a happy ending.

Crazy fun!

Took me a bit to get into it, as a lot of the editing seems choppy, but was really hooked by around the 30 minute mark, and it just keeps getting better!

Plot is completely insane in a fun way including a pint sized villain wonderfully played by Hsuah Erh (sp?) as well as shrunken.. oh well don't wanna give it away..

This movie leans heavily towards the fantasy end of the genre, so if you prefer more realistic stories, you probably won't like this.. but otherwise give it a try!

Definitely worth watching

Pretty good story, the fights are good. And there is plenty of double crossing. The story near the end goes in an unexpected direction, and was a bit of fun, there is also a couple of reveals in that last fight which has its own double crosses. Most of the acors are pretty good, the Enchantress is some sort of plot device, otherwise I am not sure why she is in the film.

A rollercoaster ride

Great fighting and cool scenery. Story can get confusing at first, but slowly starts to unravel through the end. I really enjoyed it even though the story wasn't much of a story. Best part for me: When they busted down the gate. So funny! lmao
