This is really a story about the author. If you like the Marine Corp and stories about elite snipers this might be an entertaining read. While I have no doubt about the virtues of hard military training (Swiss Army 1st lieutenant / platoon CO here) and the invaluable ability to be able to think clearly and make rapid decisions under extreme stress, and based on incomplete and constantly changing information, the communication style promoted by this book is likely to be far too forceful, too direct, too EFFECTIVE in the modern red-taped corporate world, especially in North America (I'm also a Senior engineer at Microsoft) where not bruising anyone's feelings under any circumstances is key, and to be a charming master of soft consensus is the rule. If you consider a career in the military, or, like the author, essentially manage ex military personnel in extreme disaster recovery situations, this is THE book you need. For the rest of us in the corporate world, while I fundamentally agree with - and share - most of the principles discussed, you should probably consider another book.

Jake is an excellent leader and has served in a wide variety of leadership positions ranging from Marine Scout Sniper to international disaster response and CEO of one of the fastest growing NGOs in America. The people who work for him love him and would follow him to hell and back without hesitation. This book provides excellent information for transitioning military veterans and business leaders alike. Jake provides funny examples and incredible stories that pull the reader in, draw your attention and don't let go. I couldn't put this book down.

It's one thing to lead people... it's another to truly inspire them by leading from the front, sharing the risk, being the last to sleep or eat, and showing that you truly and passionately care about their morale and well-being. Jake does this in everyday life and here he does an excellent job of explaining what true leadership is and how to "Take Command". Well worth the read.

Take Command is an interesting leadership book written by a veteran of the Armed Forces. Jake Woods' take on leadership and how he used these theories of leadership over his time developing Team Rubicon does provide leaders some perspectives on how to examine their own leadership styles. His take on concepts of "Pillars of Preparation", High Impact Teams, 80% Solution, and others should provide individuals a different lens on how to view leadership. I see the book as a leadership book written to message not only Jake Woods theories on leadership but to help others understand the mission of Team Rubicon. Easy to follow and just like other leadership books does provide some concepts that others should take into account when developing their leadership theories.
