For fans of the Colorado High Country series comes the love story of the couple who started it all!
He's the love of her life...
Rock climbing saved Megs Hall. The sport gave her an emotional escape from her abusive stepfather when she was a teen and turned her into a living legend. It also brought her together with the one man who truly understood her. Elite climber Mitch Ahearn believed in her and her abilities at a time when other male climbers just wanted to get into her pants. Somehow, Mitch broke through her armor, helping the shattered girl inside to heal. He became her first and only lover and her best friend. Together, they made history and set the climbing world-and the bedsheets-on fire
She's his only chance at survival...
Forty-eight years later, Megs and Mitch live in tiny Scarlet Springs, Colo. They've left professional climbing behind and now put their time and energy into running the Rocky Mountain Search & Rescue Team, using their vertical expertise to save lives. But when their hard-earned climbing vacation ends in tragedy, they find themselves far from home and in desperate need of rescue, with Mitch's life hanging by a thread. Megs must use all her experience and training to save him.
Will their love be only a memory?
With Mitch gravely injured, Megs finds herself reliving the past, reading the private journals he kept of their adventures together. It's a bittersweet trip down memory lane, one that reveals Mitch's innermost thoughts and his deep and abiding love for her. But will they have the chance to make more memories together and live out their happy ending-or have they come to the end of the trail?
Back in the 1970s, Megs Hill and Mitch Ahearn set the climbing world-and the bedsheets-on fire. After an accident leaves Mitch badly injured, Megs finds herself reliving their past-and fighting for the life of the only man she's ever loved.

Since Ms. Clare is on my automatic buy list, I hadn't looked to see who the lead characters were going to be before I started reading. I was surprised the novel was about Mitch and Megs who have served as important secondary characters in previous books as the founders of the Rocky Mountain Search & Rescue Team. What is unusual is that the lead characters of this novel are in their sixties. Don't let that fact put you off. The author does an incredible job of taking us back to how they met in a movie love story that does both characters justice. Megs is much more than the stern perfectionist as we learn about her back story that has shaped her life. Mitch Ahearn, her partner of 48 years is nothing short of swoon-worthy in his steadfast love and support of Megs. This is a relationship of equals with a love to which we could all aspire.
Do yourself a favor and read the series in order. You will be taken on a literary journey you won't forget. These are books to savor and reread.
When he returned they never separated again. Settling in Scarlet Springs was not high on Megs list of places to live, but Mitch saw a lot of opportunity, so she agreed. Little did she know that friends that became family would save her and Mitch’s life. Their goal was to gather and train a world class search and rescue team. After 49 years together they were retired from famous mountains and countries, but working to keep their team the best. Tragedy struck, and the test of Megs love seemed overwhelming. She persevered.
I learned so much about climbing as a sport, one I have no interest to try!
The love between these two people, the help and affection of friends and their refusal to give up makes this an a amazing read.
As the story unfolds In present day, Megs (64) and Mitch (69) experience the unthinkable on a camping/climbing getaway. Mitch, critically injured during a climb suffers a traumatic brain injury and is in a coma. Megs was advised to talk to Mitch frequently in order to stimulate brain function. She records his journal and plays the recordings to Mitch via headphones. What we, as readers, are privy to in these writings is an awareness of a relationship of none other than two true soulmates . They share not only a passion for climbing, but also help each other to grow and become their best selves along the way.
Megs is such a resilient, gutsy, courageous survivalist in every sense of the word. Her life experience unfortunately involves an abusive stepfather and at the other end of the spectrum, the most amazing man a woman could ever hope for.
I am in awe of Mitch and his utmost respect for Megs throughout their relationship. I fell in love with him and his compassion for young Megs and how he helped her discover her own sexuality through a gifted self help book. My love for him only grew deeper as the journal readings unfolded.
Ms. Clare penned Mitch’s gut wrenching recovery process in detail and boy was it powerful!!! I literally felt his struggles as he lay helplessly in the ICU and then ever so slowly makes improvements, trying to overcome his neurological deficits. Megs’ support was unwavering.
As has been evident in the other installments, the town’s people rally behind those in need and in this story that was no exception. It’s always a feel good moment!
Ms. Clare’s stellar writing created vivid imagery of the harrowing climbs of Mitch, Megs, and their friends. It played out as a movie for the mind’s eye! As a side note, it was refreshing to me to read a story of a couple in their 60’s that are still vibrant and sexually active. Life does not end as seniors. Nice little lesson.
I hope Ms. Clare continues to add books to this series. It’s been amazing! Please take the time to read the Author’s note at the end of the story. Some surprising tidbits of information revealed. Ms. Clare, keep sharing your gift of the written word. Your fans need you!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️….

If you’ve read any of the Colorado High Country series then Megs and Mitch will be familiar to you as the leaders of the mountain search and rescue team. They’re always in the thick of it, saving lives, doing good works, being indestructible and tireless.
This is their story. How they met, how long they’ve loved, what they’ve achieved. And it’s a lot!
Told in flashback we learn who they were first, before they became who they are now. Megs is 16 when she meets Mitch, in the Yosemite climbing scene of the early 1970s. I didn’t know anything about that scene, because I’m a) British and b) not a climber. So one of the things I loved was all the climbing talk. Ms Clare’s books always teach me something without being a lesson. Here I learned a lot about climbing, done well, by skilled and talented people. I always fall hard for expertise and this books ticked that box for me! I ended up deep down a Wikipedia rabbit hole about 1970s climbing and sweeping across Google Maps to see where it all takes place.
But it’s more than just that. This book is about the deep love between partners who have been together for a long time and still clearly adore one another and, more importantly, have the raging hots for one another. If, perhaps, a little less frequently!
I’m not going to tell you the plot, that would spoil it for you.
I am going to tell you that reading a book which contains the joy of early love AND the bone-deep satisfaction of a life lived with one’s beloved is a rare thing.
The crux of a good love story is a heroine to identify with and a hero to fancy. Ms Clare’s heroines are always fully agents in their own story. They’re not TSTL, they have careers and lives. Megs is awesome! A powerhouse of ambition and talent. I’d love to have been like her! Her heroes are supremely alpha in their strength, but without the arrogance and bullish attitudes of many other romantic heroes. They’re always kind, decent, good men. Mitch is a hot, decent man, very fanciable!
The story will tug at your heart at times - we call these ‘DAMMIT Pamela’ moments! But you’ll end up satisfied, with a big sigh of pleasure.
I loved it, I’ll probably read it again shortly. Just to enjoy it all over again.
The book's description can already be found in the presentation of the book in the Amazon shop - so I won't go into it. Instead, I want to describe why I find that this is a great book. And why I think it is the best of the whole series (so far):
The author keeps switching between today and memories of earlier events.
So we learn how the two (Megs and Mitch) met, we learn about their time as professional climbers. And also why they stopped and later founded the Rocky Mountain Search and Rescue Team in Scarlet Springs. There are beautiful and sad memories. Wonderful and very emotional moments with friends and companions are described. Pamela Clare once again manages to pull me along as a reader. Almost as if I were sitting next to it and witnessing it.
I think it is the strongest story of the series. Megs and Mitch are followed as they develop their feelings for each other over a long time. How they support each other. And it describes the bond of a couple that goes very deep. And of course there are sex scenes, but it is the description of the feelings around them that makes this couple so special. And it's nice that this doesn't decrease with age, but rather increases. Don't we all want a relationship like this?
What also makes this book so beautiful (and I find this so special in all Pamela Clare books): the descriptions of the landscape. I have the feeling I'm in the middle of the mountains. I definetely want to go in that region once. Also the description of their climbing trips and adventures are impressive and give an understanding what their passion is about (and I am not a climber at all). You get a feeling as well as great respect for this sport.
All in all: a wonderful story about two special people. I can only recommend reading it yourself.
