The Veil was meant to protect the world from people like me.

Great story with some minor inconsistencies in the writing

The story was original with some references to mythology that I've read before. The thing I had a problem with was the author's inconsistencies. The main character mentions a character at the beginning that she later seemed to meet for the first time. Apparently all magic has smells, then only fae magic has a smell, then different magic has different smells. Overall, it was a good story, and I would recommend it, but I was a little disappointed with some of the writing.

10% McGuffin, 90% filler, 100% dull

This book was painful to read. It wasn’t until the 40% mark that the author decided that Cassie needed to find a magical McGuffin. The author gave no information about the McGuffin except that it was on planet earth. Otherwise, what it looked like, what it did, how it worked, when it was taken, and who took it was a big ol’ 0. By the 65% mark, the author informed readers that a random item from the first 10% of the novel was the mysterious McGuffin - except 6hrs before, in the middle of the night, Cassie broke into a pawnshop and left it with a note that her friend could sell it. Sometime within that 6hrs (was it even morning yet?), the friend sold it and Cassie spends the rest of the novel trying to find it. Yawn. Cassie spends the entire novel with a shifter she met at the 15-20% mark rather than her friend, Jessica. The author never discusses the AU in which the book takes place. Apparently fae people are all slave-owners and shifters have magic and can shift pretty much anything.
