What's worse than terrible ????
Verified purchase
IF YOU'RE WONDERING WHY NONE OF THE REVIEWS TELL YOU WHAT THE MOVIE IS ABOUT IT IS BECAUSE WE DON"T KNOW EITHER!! Whatever the word is that means worse than terrible, it was created for this! It makes NO SENSE. I still don't know what was the point of the two brothers. When it started I assumed one would be good and the other evil, nope. They're just really good friends....???? If that was the point then, why the VIRGIN COOK? The rest just ASSAULTS YOUR SENSES IN PROFANE ways. Moreover, there are TOO MANY STORY LINES. 1 or 2 that tied directly into one another would have been sufficient, but I guess they were going for QUANTITY OVER QUALITY. Lastly, none of the storylines were clearly defined. It's as if someone had a good idea and gave up after a tenth of the way through. Save yourself the frustration and spend your time on something else.

Story took so long to develop didn't care when things finally happened

Tale of Tales is a fantasy story. Selma Hayek plays a queen who was so obsessed with having a child she sacrificed her own husband the king.

At first the movie seems like it will be about Hayek’s struggles with her young son. He has a twin from another woman that deeply angers Hayek. Then the story goes off about another king played by Toby Jones that has a giant insect as a pet and a daughter to be married off as and then a third king played by Vincent Cassel who is a womanizer who falls in love with the voice of an old hag. All three stories end up meandering along and the first especially drags. It doesn’t appear that there is any point to any of them. It’s not until 2/3 of the way through that things start happening. By then you have to ask yourself whether it even matters it took so long.

This Tale is Not Suitable For The Eyes Of Teens Or The Timid

.Within the first half hour of the film there is a gruesome scene where the queen devours the raw heart of a sea monster for dinner. Shortly afterwards was an erotic threesome between the king and two of his mistresses. I thoroughly enjoyed the adult version of Grimm fairy tales however I would advise parents that this is one tale that should be viewer discretion advised before making it a family movie night.

Strange but wonderful! I would watch it again!

Strange at first but if you like the unusual, this is a great movie. The movie kept my attention from beginning to end. I can not compare it to any other movies that I have seen. I loved it. It has horror and supernatural creatures. All around a good movie. An original that should be more well known. Definitely not a movie to watch with children though. It is worth your curiosity if you are reading this review!

So this movie is just odd. There are three main plot lines that, aside from existing in the same large geographical area, have nothing to do with one another. The story moves slowly and often skipped 10 seconds ahead just to get things moving.

My biggest complaint however is the ending... there really isn't one. Most of the conflicts aren't wrapped up and we are left wondering what happened to most of the characters. I wouldn't call it a waste of my evening, but I also wouldn't watch it again.

Too much of a good thing, but a very good thing it was

Just right if you are interested in seeing something different, but be prepared to have more breadcrumbs than an actual path. The movie is beautiful and bizarre, but in terms of overarching narrative it is disjointed and nonsensical. Every story feel so profoundly unfinished and overall that leaves the viewer hugely dissatisfied, but the dissatisfaction is due largely to the fact that each little piece is so lovely and promising to begin with. Definitely a win-lose, but not at all a waste of time.

Love this movie

First I watched this on Netflix when it was up on there. I loved it. I watched it twice in a row in order to get the real feel of the dark tales it told. It doesn't leave anything out as well much like some fairy tale stories. The movie made me so fascinated with the world of the author that I am searching into getting a few of his books just to explore more of this artistic abilities. Definitely advise this movie if you like the dark fairy tales.

Cross between Pan's Labrinthe and a dark Grimm Fairytale
Verified purchase
If you enjoy dark fantasy you might like this. Definately not a movie to watch with children present. Just don't expect a happy ending. It's definately creative and well acted and the scenery and wardrobe are superb - not a cheap film. It's sort of cross between Pan's Labyrinthe and a Grimm Fairytale. I found it incredibly interesting.
