3.0 out of 5 stars With Tales of Power I've had enough of Castaneda...
By ♫NewHorizons♫ on March 4, 2018
Well, I just finished Castaneda's fourth (and last) book in the don Juan series. I read Tales of Power, and his three previous books, not out of any interest or fascination in -- let alone hope of becoming -- a "man of knowledge," a "sorcerer," or a "warrior." I read them first to see what all the fuss was about a few decades ago and also to see just what Castaneda had gotten away with. As works of anthropology, of ethnography, I give these books one star -- as an anthropologist, Castaneda was a charlatan who somehow he managed to fool the likes of Garfinkle and those on his UCLA dissertation committee.

As an author of fiction, of fantasy, he verged on brilliance, and I'd give each of these books, including Tales of Power, four stars. So, one star for science (which it purported to be) and four stars for fantasy (which it really is) rounds up to three stars on average. Castaneda had quite the imagination in his discussions of both the don Juan and don Genaro characters. That said, I've had enough. I have absolutely no interest in reading any of Castaneda's books that appeared after this one.
