4.0 out of 5 starsReally Hard to Pick a Favorite as Every One of These Tales Had Merit!
Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2015
"One couldn't be too careful these days with watchful eyes on every street corner, monitoring every checkout line or city crosswalk"

"I will give you what you need so that the whole world will buy it-- hook, line, and sinker. No one's gonna know what we did here"

"They can listen. We don't know what they're capable of"

"As I will relate to you, I have evidence to fear for my own safety, which is why I feel compelled to write down this secret history"

Just a small sampling of passages from these dozen tales that kept me engaged long past midnight one evening. So often these anthologies are composed of lesser writers looking for a way to break out from the pack - not the case here. All these authors are proven, having written scores of other fine books making the choice of a personal favorite that much more difficult. But if I had to choose just one, I'd have to say I really enjoyed "That's a Wrap from the Sea of Tranquility" by Eric Tozzi for both for the twist at the end and great exchanges of dialogue like this passage, "Nice job, McNixon." "Thanks," I say, "So what's next. Mars?" He doesn't smile when he says this; "Don't be cute, McNixon. Remember our agreement. We'll know if you break it."

You'll probably have a tough time picking a favorite, too, but with handy links from the table of contents allowing you to access any of the tales in any order you choose at least that's one reason it's made a bit easier...or is it? Very good collection and I do recommend!

3.0 out of 5 starsTales of Fact or Fiction? Only the Crazy Folks know for sure.
Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2015
The insanity of conspiracies brought to life. Diving into the warped minds of several conspiracy theorists is always a dangerous endeavor. Perhaps all of these authors should be confined to the loonie bin but even crazy people should not be ignored. What fun would it be to have different opinions on the great mysteries without sharing them. Drawing a line between fact and fiction has always stimulated the debate. Whether the line is solid, dotted or imaginary.

Several of these tales were quite entertaining in both prose and plot. The characters were all colorful and perhaps even believable. A few were a struggle to get through. One aspect of the entire anthology that is appealing is the diversity of styles, depth and plot devices. No two are even close to the same.

The notations following each tale provide some clarification of the conspiracies imbedded, the cloud of mystery surrounding them and some of the facts related to them. The facts used in some to tie the tales into the historical fabric surrounding the event provided some fun as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Truths in Disguise?

I’m a lot like that kooky cop from “Law & Order” in that I never met a conspiracy theory I did not like, at least on some level, from UFO cover-ups and JFK’s assassination to chem-trails and HAARP. All of which, I guess, makes me the perfect reader for this anthology of fictionalized conspiracy theories. As with all anthologies built around a proscribed theme, there are highs and lows, but what is surprising here is that there are so few lows, and the lows are not all that low, stemming more from a simplistic approach to the subject rather than anything really being wrong with the writing or storytelling. At the low end of the spectrum we have stories like “Under the Grassy Knoll,” which is well written, but takes a direct and literal approach to the JFK assassination, launching a direct assault on the accepted story with the intended goal to “expose the truth.” Of course, as author Richard Gleaves admits in his afterword, the truth isn’t what it used to be, and often is not what people are looking for. At the other end of the spectrum are many stories which not only look at a particular conspiracy from an oblique angle, but manage to evoke the ambiguity of the subject and the paranoia that afflicts everyone who considers the reality of conspiracy theories, even those whose investigations into behind-the-scenes machinations amount only to dabbling. Some of the stories are quite fun, such as the pulpish “Heil, Hitler!”, which postulates the reality of all conspiracy theories, not just the ones that are obvious and celebrated, but also the obscure ones (perhaps even my favorite—Moon Nazis) and the ones that have escaped notice by everyone…all real, at least in some timeline. Each story if followed by an afterword by the author, sometimes providing an insight into the conspiracy behind the story, more often giving an illumination of the author’s inspiration or mind-set. As a diversion, “Tales of Tinfoil” is quite enjoyable and a fun read, and it’s all fiction…yeah, you keep telling yourself that.

5.0 out of 5 stars The writing varies from pretty darn good to breathtaking
Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2015

These Kindle story collections vary widely in quality, believe you me. This one is top notch. I won't synopsize the stories -- I'm sure a more intrepid reviewer will -- but they cover the gamut of the major modern conspiracy theories... JFK, the moon landing, Elvis and more. Each story focuses on a particular conspiracy theory or source of paranoia and develops it. They're not all conspiracy theories, though. In one story, the government is trying to trick a pilot into launching a preemptive nuclear war, another explains how Abe Lincoln was eliminated and replaced by a double by French intelligence (sounds ridiculous? read it), and so on.

The writing varies from pretty darn good to breathtaking. Not a single one let me down. And the stories tend to be longer. While I enjoy really short stories, a really detailed story can't be told in three or four pages. A story like Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily" can be told in four pages, but these stories are delicious and involving enough to savor for a lot longer. They're not too long; on the contrary, we don't want them to end.

Five honest stars, no inflation. JB

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining Look at Paranoia and Conpiracy!
Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2015

Great collection of stories built on myths, legends, and questions about reality. I enjoyed all of the tales, but my favorite is the story of the Elvis conspiracy. Now you've even got me thinking "what if..." I also liked the review at the tale end of the story that tells what the story's basis is. In a way, it's a nice wrap up to lay out the facts and theories, and then decide for yourself which viewpoint is the most plausible, or if it's all wild imagination, combined with a smidgen of speculation.

I also loved the Kennedy conspiracy. I visited the tower and the grassy knoll many years ago and tried to picture the events as they must have occurred, and the tale in this book actually struck a note of truth. I don't recall any drainage areas from my visit, but if they're really there, this is the most likely scenario that I've ever heard.

Kudos to all of the writers in this book--well done!

4.0 out of 5 stars The book "they" don't want you to read!
Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2015

This collection of short stories is centered on a fascinating premise- each story is built around a conspiracy theory (sometimes more than one). There's a variety of styles and a diverse collection of conspiracies. Each author follows the story with some comments and observations on the conspiracy involved and the story itself. It's not great literature, but it is enjoyable, especially if you have an interest, as I do, not so much in the details of conspiracy theories as the fact that they persist. Was the moon landing staged by Hollywood? Who was on the grassy knoll in Dallas? Did Elvis fake his own death? What is "reality" anyway? Are "they" really out to get us? Not only do you get to ponder questions like these, you get to read some authors you might not otherwise have encountered (there are links to the respective authors' pages at Amazon if you want to read more of their work).

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Hit and Miss, But Worth Picking Up for the Stars
Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2015

This was extremely hit and miss. A couple of the stories were so well done and so scary they gave me nightmares. A few were so terrible that I started skimming after the first two pages, and then ultimately skipped them and moved on to the next one. But the stars more than make up for the busts.

There is a ton of variety here - CIA/FBI programs, Hollywood deals with the devil & Suicide Mouse, the deaths of Elvis and JFK, flying saucers, alternate histories, and even fascinating spins on historical figures like Lincoln. The tones of the individual stories varied widely as well, from sweet and funny to surreal to hardcore grit and grime. Essentially, there's something for everyone and it was a fun change of pace for me.

Worth picking up, as long as you give yourself permission to skip the ones that aren't your style!

Terrific series of stories. The attention to detail (such as the special type of pistol used to shoot JFK) was spot on. Umbrella Man, eat your heart out! Polkadot Dress Lady! You are outed now! OMG! Hoping that the Galactic Overlords who engineer all of this drama in our lives will please stop reading and contributing stories to The National Enquirer! Yes, we know that Bruce Jenner and the Kardashians are constructs morphed from the Large Greys, but we got enough trouble right here in River City as it is with Obama and the Lizard Men. Yikes, I hear a Black Helicopter hovering in my front yard! Gotta Go Now ....

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun take on some offbeat conspiracies

This collection made for some fun yet thought-provoking reading. I was left more amused than paranoid for the most part, but I felt thoroughly entertained throughout.

I quite enjoyed some of the conspiracies that were touched upon, and the way they were handled. The last story -- "Fear of the Unknown and Loathing in Hollywood" -- was incredibly engaging, taking you on a fever-induced roller coaster ride that I didn't want to end, but the ending was delicious, IMO.

Definitely worth reading, a fun and engaging collection for those who enjoy conspiracy theories, or those who just enjoy well-told, thought-provoking tales.

5.0 out of 5 stars A mixed bag with some true excellence and good navigation
Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2015

The stories were a mixed bag, but you get that in any anthology. Two or three of them were excellent, and you don't get that in every anthology. But since they're a mixed bag, you might find different ones excellent than I did. There were some stories about everyday people caught up in the conspiracies, some over the top ones about the people involved in the conspiracies, and some used a minimal story to tell about the conspiracy. And there's a section after each story that gets into the "facts" of the conspiracy. fnord.

And I gotta say, this was one of the best Kindle books I've read. The navigation was excellently done, making it easy to skip around in the book, which is especially important in an anthology. Kudos to the editor for that.

Amusing and often imaginative takes on many of the classic and contemporary conspiracy theories. The short story format makes for a quick read, if you don't have much time, or a constant pageturner, if you have more.
