Many of Roald Dahl best stories come to life
Verified purchase
Having read all the books by my favorite British Intelligence officer Roald Dahl that I could find, I came across this anthology quite by accident. This collection includes stories by other authors as well, but Roald Dahl's stories outshine them all in my opinion. Most Americans have only read his children's books, but he is much more talented than that. He has a great dry wit, that has been tempered by by quite a tragic childhood. I only wish I had met him in person. He was truly a great mind and if you read his many books first this series will be quite the welcome desert.

Memories From Overseas USAF Assignment
Verified purchase
While assigned to the UK while in the USAF, I happened across this marvelous series. Similar to Twilight Zone and other anthologies, overall there are many excellent stories presented. As with most anthologies, there are some episodes which simply don't appeal to me. However most are of that slightly twisted, macabre, dark humor (humour) style which I totally love.
I did rate this only 4-stars. Partially for the above-mentioned 'miss' episodes. But mostly due to the packaging, which was a bit shoddy. However, the discs themselves worked perfectly (after cleaning several of them, which had some surface contamination).
Bottom line: I'm more than pleased with this purchase.

Good entertaining series

Love this series,..lots of interesting varied stories, many different stars appear in different episodes, somewhat along the lines of the “Alfred Hitchcock Presents “show..only a bit more up to date,(meaning 1980s) most of the episodes have a nice unexpected twist at the end,..very English in style..be aware if you live in USA you will have to have have an all region DVD player as this series won’t play on conventional DVD players available in the USA.

Dahl and the stars
In this age of binge watching (a recent phenomenon, one I could not imagine when I was growing up), it's tempting to want to watch all the episodes of a television series when they are readily available to stream on your computer.

I just can't do that with this television series. Each episode has a major star from the golden days of television and the theater. The acting is superb. The episodes are like well-written plays. Roald Dahl gives the viewer something to think about when he introduces each episode. Having been a huge fan of Dahl when I watched 'The Witches' and 'James and the Giant Peach' (my kids read the books), I can't skip that opening talk in which he discusses the process of writing the short story from which the episode was adapted.

It's exhausting. When I realized this is 8 seasons, I knew I had to nibble away at this pie. It's too rich for one sitting. I'll be watching this for months to come. Very good television!

Hard to believe I had never seen this before.
These are fantastic shows! Granted they are very old school, made when I was a kid, but very well done and similar to the Hitchcock Hour. I suppose American television networks didn't want it competing with our similar shows, because this is a very well crafted collection of stories, with great stars and excellent narration, by the author.

What is old can be new again
Since I am a Baby Boomer I am very familiar with most of the actors in these stories. Maybe not everyone's name, but certainly the faces. It's good to see them again and I'm enjoying the stories for their simplicity and novelty. Many of them have been many times since in different ways and with newer actors. This doesn't detract from the original version at all. It's like reading a favorite book again and again or listening to a favorite tune for the umpteenth time. I like to imagine how the stories might be updated for today's viewers and the problems that surround us now. The lessens haven't changed (hopefully) just the settings. I'm sure today's version would most likely have sex, violence and bad language but I don't think these things would improve the original series at all. And look at those James Bond type dancers during the intro.

Do you dare watch to the fateful end of each story?
I used to watch Tales of the Unexpected all the time. It has a sense of "do you dare watch it", as each of the episodes are different stories of how people become involved or involve themselves to fateful endings with never the same characters. The episodes are introduced by Roald Dahl, himself. The show is well acted and well produced. I'm glad it's available.
