Chaos ensues when the housekeepers learn that Mark, the chauffeur, has run off the road and died. One secret / rumor is that old Mr. Thornberry had purchased an expensive Crown and then hid it! But nobody knows where it is hidden. Unknown to Mrs. Thornberry, the housekeepers have a secret room where they keep a collection of books and meet to discuss some of the manor's mysteries.
Where is the missing crown hidden? Was Mark's death an accident or murder? Does the cat hold clues to the manor's many mysteries? Can Laura Lee solve the puzzle of the missing crown and Mark's death?
CeeCee James has a great start to a new mystery series. Can you imagine living in a house where books are prohibited? This story has great characters and realistic situations. There are plenty of twists and turns and red herrings to keep the reader guessing clear to the end.
The characters and the mansion are what make this story so interesting. There are secrets galore and the only one who seems to know them all is the cat, Hank. The pace is good with puzzle pieces revealed that all come together nicely in the end. Unfortunately, Mrs. Thornberry still wants books banned, so the ladies will have to keep their secret library to read and discuss the classics.
If you like cozy mysteries with quirky characters, you will enjoy this one. Definitely kept my interest.
Laura Lee Smith is the newest housekeeper at Thornberry Mansion and quickly realizes that there is a lot going on! When they hear that Mark, the chauffeur, has died in a car accident it turns the house upside down so Laura and the staff come together in the secret room to make a plan. Go with Laura, Mary and their co-workers as they look for clues that will help them figure out if this was an accident or murder!
These characters are wonderful, I love the old mansion as the setting and I'm excited to read the next book in this charming series!
As the story progressed, I started getting a feeling of whodunit especially after some good clues. And the chauffeur may not have been the only murder to happen at the estate. Lots of secrets were held by different people, so there were quite a few suspects. Secrets always have a way of surfacing, so by the end, everything seemed to be well-explained, but I'm sure the house will still have the same cool and creepy atmosphere to it when I read the next book! Oh, last but not least, Hank the cat was a superstar as far as characters went. If that little guy could talk, the case would have been broken the first day most likely! What an awesome kitty!

Also, Princess Diana had tiaras, she never had a crown as she was never Queen, so I am afraid Mr T was defrauded if he thought that was what he was buying.
Finally I presume it was written for an American audience but I agree with the reviewer who said that transposing a prewar English stately home to modern day USA just doesn't work. Sorry.
A GARDENER a ghost? A Secret Book Club that the ladies all attended. Gossip, adventure and many secrets in and outside the house.
Loved it. Gentle, quirky, and lots of laughs. A bit of investigation thrown in. I am hoping the next one is just as fun.
