A Scot on fire
Wrongfully imprisoned and tortured by an unseen enemy, Broderick MacPherson lives for one purpose—punishing the villain who targeted him. But when a wayward English lass interrupts his revenge, he loses his enemy in the dark. Now, her compelled testimony could send Broderick back to the prison that nearly killed him. Unless they find a loophole—an inconvenient, shockingly tempting loophole.
A beauty under pressure
For Kate Huxley, visiting her brother in the Scottish Highlands is a blissful escape from the stifling expectations of the marriage mart. Blissful, that is, until a scarred, beastly Highlander with a heartbreaking past frightens her out of her wits, making her a witness in a criminal inquiry.
A match to light the darkness
Kate has no wish to testify against a man who’s already suffered too much. But the only remedy is to become his wife. And she can’t possibly marry such a surly, damaged man … can she? Well, perhaps. If it means she can stay in her beloved Scotland. And if he promises they’ll never fall in love.

About the author

Reading romance novels came easily to Elisa Braden. Writing them? That took a little longer. After graduating with degrees in creative writing and history, Elisa spent too many years in “real” jobs writing T-shirt copy ... and other people’s resumes ... and articles about giftware displays. But that was before she woke up and started dreaming about the very unreal job of being a romance novelist. Better late than never.
Elisa lives in the Pacific Northwest, where you're constitutionally required to like the colors green and gray. Good thing she does. Other items on the "like" list include cute dogs, strong coffee, and epic movies. Of course, her favorite thing of all is hearing from readers who love her characters as much as she does.

Broderick gets wrongfully imprisoned in book 1. He spends six months living in hell. He gets tortured and mutilated. When he finally gets out, he's near death. The MacPhersons tried to do everything to protect him while he was in, but some powerful unknown enemy clearly wanted Broderick to suffer as much as possible.
In the 2nd book we learn, he spent another six months recuperating, getting stronger and planning his revenge. His only purpose is to find his enemy and be the judge, jury and executioner. He almost succeeds, but he is accidentally interrupted by our heroine, Lady Kate Huxley (sister of the 1st book's hero) who is visiting his brother and her sister-in-law. Unfortunately the villain gets away, which puts Broderick in great danger and risks him getting back to the prison. Kate, being the witness, does not want to testify against Broderick, especially after learning about his horrific past. The only way to prevent Kate from testifying is to actually marry Broderick. This works fine for Kate, who doesn't want to return to the marriage mart, plus in Scotland she finally feels inspired to write. But Broderick does not want a wife, even said wife is kind-hearted, sweet, protective of him and her laughter is like sunshine.
The best thing was watching these two longing for each other, but trying to hold back. It was very moving when their resolve finally crumbled.
Broderick was everything. He went through hell, almost died and came out being just the shell of who he used to be. Annie (his sister) says he was the best among them and I believe it. He became brooding, vengeful and dark. He thought he didn't need love and no one could love a man like him anyway, but there came Kate with her weird singing-talk and play/novel writing and stole his heart. They are polar opposites, and that's what made them perfect for each other. Broderick was very protective of both his family and Kate, but he still tried to keep her at arm's length. He had to heal and to see the good in life again and he had to want a future life after he fulfilled his vengeance. Kate was caring, warm-hearted but naïve and immature too. She feared by loving someone, she has to give up herself and her dreams. I loved how protective she was of Broderick. They both grew together, and the character arch is chef's kiss in this book.
The steamy scenes were super steamy and their chemistry was awesome! They equally had the hots for each other.
The action scenes had me biting my nails and stress sweat excessively.
Although this is a darker story, except the part about Broderick's time in prison, it didn't feel suffocating, thanks to the humor and banter. Sometimes I was laughing out loud, other times I was reaching for tissues. This book stayed with me. My thoughts keep circling back to the characters and I can't wait for the 3rd installment.
Why is it always so much more difficult to express my liking for one book more than an other.
While there is no big fuss about the author, I await each new release like a gold digger scrutinizes his sieve. Each is a gem to cherish, and this one no different.
This tale is more sober and more somber than its prequel, but it is still a recipient of the author’s narrative talent, of her skill to bring multidimensional flawed souls to life.
I do remember when the Rescued From Ruin series ended having a thought for the last two Huxleys remaining unmarried. When John was a figure of the shadows, Kate was very much there, a lively young girl then miss during the span of years unraveling the different romances.
Of all the Huxleys sisters, I thought her at first a bit on the meek side, afraid of her own shadow but it is a misleading impression, she is a babbling mess when stressed, her imaginative brain creates monsters when there is none, she is the worst liar possible while in fact she is made of magic, she sparks in the dark, she has been made to lighten even the darkest place, to ignite the closed place, to free the trapped soul and broken heart. She sees the good in people and by offering her backing, she releases them from their shackles. Why she is able to look past Broderick’s scars to comprehend the man behind the mask.
How I was heartbroken for Broderick in the previous book, the horrors he survived were just inconceivable, all because of someone crazy wounded ego.
Now disfigured, damaged, he is only breathing for his need to exact revenge. An eye for an eye.
He has no other reason to live, and knows it might end with his own demise.
Why he instantly builds a wall between him and Kate, she is too innocent to touch the beast he has become. But Kate is a force to be reckoned, she does not understand the meaning of “no”. And one brick at a time, she crumbles every wall he tries to erect between them.
This is a moving but also scorching hot tale of a lady with a magic heart mending one caress after an other the crippled soul of a man who has lost his way.

Well for ‘The Temptation of a Highlander’, I would challenge ANYONE to find something that they disliked?
Honestly, this book has everything that I want in a great story: believable characters that you simply fall in love with, wonderful prose, a tight, well structured plot that has subplots beautifully interwoven in it, protagonists that have you rooting for them from start to finish.
What else can I say? Oh yes - In Broderick Macpherson you have a character that has been through so much wickedness committed upon him that he absolutely deserves to find his way out of the aftermath of a wrongful imprisonment which took him to the brink of death. And he does, thanks to the love and care of his amazing family and the love of Kate Huxley. (If you have read any of Elisa’s Rescued From Ruin series you will know who she is. If not, why not? This is a fabulous series and so absolutely worth reading.)
This is the second of Elisa Braden’s Midnight in Scotland series. And honestly, I adored the book. Not always easy to read because of Broderick’s incarceration in an early 19th century Edinburgh prison. But so worth it, because it added to the depth of the realism in the book. I shall be reading this again and again because there is much to enjoy too. Once I had finished I simply felt adrift. THAT is is the sign of a great book. I expect this to be winning all kinds of awards. Congratulations in advance, Elisa!

Broderick MacPherson was wrongfully imprisoned and tortured, now he seeks revenge on those who have done it to him. Kate Huxley has come to Scotland to find herself, to fulfil her dream to become a writer and being an independent woman, who foes not want to enter the marriage mart in England again. When these two meet, boy does it get hot.
I loved Broderick, a scarred protector, he was always trying to save those around him and has a weak spot for women in peril, always doing his best to protect them, he also has a wild and dark side. He is bent one revenge and rightfully so, he is scarred on the outside and broken on the inside. His thirst for revenge almost drops him in hot water again. In comes Kate.
I will be honest, my first impression of Kate wasn't a good one, but she grew on me. I guess I have this expectation of heroine meets hero, but Elisa gave us a honest reaction on Kate's part. When she first met Broderick she was afraid of him, she thoughght she witnessed him do a horrifying thing, but then she saw the person that he was, you quickly realised that she understood her judgement of him was wrong, she fell in love with him and wanted to help him, just as much as she wanted to help herself at first.
I loved them together, they found in each other what they were missing, Kate wasn't just a free spirited girl afraid of marriage, she is witty and has a heart made of gold, Broderick wasn't just a beast bent on revenge, he was a man trying to protect himself and his family, and when they got together it became explosive. It was a pleasure to watch them fall in love, the banter between them, they are becoming one of my favourite couples. The helpful Mrs McBean shows up again in the story, to help the happy couple, well she's not exactly helpful and it gets hilarious, god I love that woman, she always makes me chuckle.
The villain of the story is not a cardboard character either and how he worked behind the scenes to make Broderick suffer, he is not exactly a rolling moustache villain, more like a bloodthirsty one. The kind of character who becomes obsessed with one upping people who he thinks did him wrong. But he does receive his comeuppance.
Throw in a marriage of convenience, a sprinkle of humor and a dash of danger, and we get a perfect story.
*I received a free copy in form of an ARC from the author in exchange for my honest review*

The Taming of a Highlander is the second book in Elisa’s Midnight in Scotland series and tells the story of Broderick and Katie. It can be read as a stand-alone although it involves then follows on from events in book one [The Making of a Highlander] but all is explained so you don’t feel as if you have missed out. Obviously, reading the first book will have set you up for this as soon as you start reading.
Broderick MacPherson has survived unimaginable horrors having been wrongfully imprisoned and tortured by the machinations of an unseen enemy. His only aim in life now is to find the villain and mete out justice. Having cornered the enemy, he is accidentally interrupted in his ultimate vengeance by Lady Kate Huxley. His enemy disappears but Broderick is in real danger of being sent back to the prison that nearly broke him if she is forced to give her testimony. There is only one way to stop that from happening – and he is shockingly tempted.
Lady Kate Huxley is on a visit to her brother and his wife in the Scottish Highlands and she has fallen in love with the place. She dreads having to return to the monotonous rounds of the marriage mart. She has found her muse. When she witnesses the terrifying, scarred Highlander about to exact his vengeance she is frightened. When she learns of his heartbreaking past she does not want to make life worse for him. But the only way to stop that is to marry him. Can Kate shine a light into Broderick’s damaged heart and banish the darkness within?
Occasionally you read a book that touches every part of your soul. I cannot describe how wonderful this book is. This story really put me through the wringer. It is darker in tone than the first in the series and I was expecting that but when we are given the flashback to what actually happened to Broderick throughout his ordeal I was almost in tears. I almost didn’t want to read that part because you know what happens to him and it is beyond bearing but I was compelled to.
Broderick emerges from that a completely changed man physically and mentally and your heart just aches for him. He is so strong to survive what he did. I fell in love with Broderick. He went through such horrors, but he did not lose his courage, honour, kindness, or gentleness. He was focused on his revenge, but he didn’t throw away his relationships or withdraw from his family. His love for them shines through. Kate threw him for a loop but although he was at first surly and distant, he was never cruel. In fact, he recognised fairly quickly what Kate meant to him and he did everything to keep her protected.
I loved Kate. She is kind, sweet-natured, independent and will do anything for her loved ones. She is definitely a Huxley with that Huxley flush! She is also a ray of sunshine and joy in Broderick’s dark world. I love how she wants to protect Broderick and keep him from harm.
Although it is slightly darker and there are elements of heartrending sorrow in parts, the story is filled with humour, charm, passion, hope and whimsy. Elisa’s writing is superb. She has the ability to make the reader feel what the protagonists feel. With a word here and a sentence there the reader is submerged into the world she creates. She really is a master of her craft. The story is scattered with so many sweet and humorous moments that steal your heart – Kate’s habit of touching Broderick’s scarred face for one, Mrs MacBean’s Stoat Tonic - and I have to admit that I did not realise what ‘coo’ meant till Kate giggled over Broderick’s pronunciation!
The secondary cast of characters are as always wonderful. The MacPherson men – Angus, Alexander, Campbell and Rannoch, John and Annie, Sabella who breaks my heart, Magdelene, Francis and the fabulously eccentric Mrs MacBean. They all contribute to and enrich the story.
I was gifted an ARC of this but will be buying my own copy and am [as expected] waiting with bated breath for the next story in this series. It goes without saying that I highly recommend you read this book. I know it will be a permanent fixture on my reread list.
