Can't go wrong with this collected short stories

Larry's stuff is always worth a read. This is no exception. Though a collection of short stories..some reprinted from other books...there are still stories worthy of the investment. Included are written forms of what were Audible only stories..as well as some very intetesting...humourous...and some not so humourous.

DEAD WAITS DREAMING is a great Lovecraftian story. The Hannah Stone story BLOOD ON THE WATER was another fantastic outing to the beginnings of the MONSTER HUNTER INTERNATIONAL Series...and being a fan of David Drake's HAMMERS SLAMMERS series...THE LOSING SIDE was a great read.

Some people may bitch about reprints or collections if short stories but not me. I enjoy having stories collected so it reinforces the memories of the great stuff I have read.

Disclaimer: I am a fan of Larry's writing. Hence part of the reason for buying this book. Until now I had only read 1 short story by him. I have read his full length book series - MHI, Hard Magic, and SotBS.

Reading these short stories has been a pleasure. These stories cover a good span of his writing career, time wise as well as settings.

One thing about a short story is that if it's good or bad it's over quickly. And you, as the reader will decide if you like the story and author as quickly.

I enjoyed each of the stories and the variety of settings where they take place. Some authors are unable to move outside of their established element, not an issue here.

Larry's Books Rock !! Larry writes his books to have the most fun in a sci fi, fantasy, maximum rounds per minute style that you could really hope. When I think about the content and story line, it seems like these books should be TOO OVER THE TOP to keep me interested. But, they are not. Larry makes it work. I think it is Larry's really great style, story, pacing, and characters that keep things on track. He is gifted with maximum writing talent in all of those areas. The folks at MHI are always in too much trouble and that is the way they like it. I do too.

My son introduced me to the Monster Hunters. Guns, monsters, guns, what more can I say?
Big fan of Military SciFi. Larry doesn't get all geeked up about meters and feet. Another favorite author had a spell where everything was listed in both measurement systems. He's now #3.
Lots of action keeps your interest in this collection. The range of characters from the sublime to the ridiculous adds to the literal breakneck pace of the theme.
I find myself checking Amazon for the latest installment.

Anthologies. You truly never know quite where you'll end up, but Larry's writing will guarantee it'll be an eventful journey. Originally discovered his work after I was injured and had to recover for several months due to surgery. I'd seen the Grimnoir books pop up in my recommended reads for a while and decided to give them a shot. Wrapped up that series and jumped into the wild world of MHI and loved it. At this point if he published a cookbook I'd buy that too.

First and foremost the prospective buyer need to understand that this is an anthology of works across Larry's portfolio. While his Monster Hunter series is well represented with two original works and a weird west MHI short story that had been previously printed in a separate anthology. Larry also brings back his hero from the Hard Magic series in a pair of excellent short stories. Larry also writes on some other author's worlds. In one titled " The Losing Side" he enters David Drake's magnificent Hammer's Slammers universe. In a different short story Larry gives his take on a Sci Fi Lovecraft/Cthulu story. I particularly enjoyed the Strange Interdimensional insurance agent story. I couldn't help but laugh at the increasingly ludicrous pop culture references and general silliness. I'd recommend purchasing this anthology if you like Larry's work, you will find something you like in it.

I'm a Monster Hunter junkie and was happy to see their were stories in that universe. Hands down the best series I have ever read. Anyways, enjoyed all of the shorts in this collection and have a new list of potential books to hopefully keep me entertained until the next Monster Hunter release. I hope Miss Correia will allow her pen name to be shared soon, I really enjoyed Hannah's POV. Also, hoping for more from Bubba, short stories, spin-off ...... fingers crossed!

For readers unfamiliar with Correia it's a chance to check out samples from several of his best selling series. They are all good. From action adventure to horror, from magic to massive firepower I can't say wich tale I like the most. Glad a second such collection will be forthcoming later in the year.

The better men thing is meant as a compliment, referring to the indispensable features to recognize a man from a random gender studies guy. Which is also depicted as likeable-ish in this amazing book. And this is where you may think that the fantasy fiction becomes a little too absurd. The book gives a great vibe about people (and manatees) being a positive force. I liked that too!
