Product Description

Tarzan, the Ape Man (1981) (DVD)

Bo Derek stars in this steamy update of a classic Tarzan film. Jim Parker, his beautiful daughter, Jane, and safari photographer Holt embark on an expedition to the wilds of Africa in search of the fabled elephants' graveyard. Instead they find Tarzan, The Ape Man. While Jane is swimming in a secluded pool, Tarzan kidnaps her. Jim threatens the jungle lord, but Tarzan soon returns Jane unharmed--and smitten. The Parker expedition, however, is captured by the murderous Ivory Warriors, guardians of the sacred elephants' graveyard. Tarzan rescues Jane from the brutal warrior chief, but her father is killed--and Jane decides to stay in the jungle with the ape-man she loves.

2.0 out of 5 stars More Jane than Tarzan
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 21, 2011
Although this film is called Tarzan the Ape Man, Tarzan actually has very little to do with it; in fact, he only makes his appearance about half way through. The film starts off with James Parker (Richard Harris) and his daughter Jane (Bo Derek) going on an expedition to find a fabled inland sea. It is only when the expedition gets into trouble with wild animals and hostile natives that Tarzan makes his entrance. Even then, it's still mostly about James and Jane.

I saw this film on TV many years ago and after seeing other collaborations of the Dereks, Fantasies, A Woman of Desire and Bolero, thought that I would give this one another viewing. As with the other films, I was less than impressed by the acting and writing. There is an attempt at humour such as dubbing the Tarzan yell over the MGM lion logo but it is more embarrassing than funny. Richard Harris lends weight to the production but it is a losing battle. Bo Derek did well when she literally gets wrapped up with a python but the scene was spoiled by superimposed shots and slow motion. She looks good wet and topless though. Miles O'Keeffe made a good Tarzan, in fact I thought he looked a better Tarzan than Ron Ely did in the TV series.

Attention to detail is not a strong point here. The film is set in Africa but was made in the Seychelles and in Sri Lanka. Asian elephants were used, Orang-Utans are native to Sumatra and Borneo, not Africa, and the python was a Burmese. Maybe we are not supposed to notice these things. As I said previously, it was a long time ago that I saw this film and it will probably be a long time before I watch it again.
