Justin D Hill is the author of the Necromunda novel Terminal Overkill, the Warhammer 40,000 novels Cadia Stands and Cadian Honour, the Space Marine Battles novel Storm of Damocles and the short stories ‘Last Step Backwards’, ‘Lost Hope’ and ‘The Battle of Tyrok Fields’, following the adventures of Lord Castellan Ursarkar E. Creed. He has also written ‘Truth Is My Weapon’, and the Warhammer tales ‘Golgfag’s Revenge’ and ‘The Battle of Whitestone’. His novels have won a number of prizes, as well as being Washington Post and Sunday Times Books of the Year. He lives ten miles uphill from York, where he is indoctrinating his four children in the 40K lore.

Descriptions were amazed and it was an incredible look into what life is like in Necromunda. Pacing was great. Descriptions were wonderful. Everything was so good. I'm really shocked how bad this was to me.

A bad ass female lead in WH40k should be a strong one for me, but the writing is weak, so many of the characters don't interest me much, and there are certainly a lot of hanging items that you get no closure for.

I think part of it is the main character survives by luck so often, even for fiction it gets to be too much.

Shocked by how this went for me, as not at all what I was expecting.

I enjoyed it. I play as Escher so this was a must listen for me (the audiobook version). The narrator was good, but i did need to raise the playback speed a bit since she reads a bit slower than i'd like. Other than that she was great.
The story is satisfying but i do wish it was a bit longer. I would divide this book into four acts and, as others have said, the final act of the book feels rushed. this is a gritty tale of survival that spans years. some action, some horror, some really gut wrenching moments. i enjoyed it enough to hope for a sequel especially given the open ending.

A Gritty and Gut-wrenching Read

Overall this is a solid story with quick brutal pacing and some truly captivating moments. Brielle's story is one of ruin, revenge and ultimately coming full circle. If you're looking for a stark and brutal depiction of like in an Underhive this is it.

The characters, next to Brielle, aren't overly memorable. Because of how her story progresses she spends a lot of her time moving from place to place and doesn't really build a gang you get to know and like with her. While she does found the Black Spiders near the end of the story most of the details we learn about them are surface level and this was a missed opportunity. That being said, this is her story being told from her perspective so in that case, it makes sense.

The plot is that of a revenge thriller and a riches, to rags, to riches story painted in blood and is enjoyable. However, there are certain cool elements within the story that are never fully explored. Her twin brother Reiko, for example, an anomaly as far as the lore goes is never explained in any meaningful way and it was a real missed opportunity to not explore how he, a fully functioning male member of House Escher, feels and acts in this world. Likewise, the Psyker Solomon is an interesting concept and character that gets left behind when Brielle moves on. In this case, I reckon it's more playing into the fact Brielle is no hero and while she may not like the insane cult leader with mind-melding powers eating compressed fate from sewage and garbage (yes REALLY. It's called Scrape) she's not going to stick he neck out to kill him.

As stated above this is a fun book to read if you're looking for a dark, gruesome and fast-paced tale of revenge in the Warhammer 40-K Universe.
